Attending site is one of the most satisfying parts of a project for an architect. The earlier stages of a project which can (and usually) take years of planning and drawing finally turn into reality and those drawings and spaces that have been diligently crafted are being put out into the world.
We have been making regular site visits on our Hertfordshire Constabulary Headquarters project and the exterior of the building is really taking shape. The facade is being completed and the glu-lam timber roof is finished. Curtain walling and internal partitions are progressing well.
We took one of our work experience students around the building so they could learn first hand about a working construction site and experience some of the challenges that can present themselves during this phase. We believe this to be invaluable experience for anyone starting out in their career.

Last Friday we had our first AI workshop with the excellent Keir Regan-Alexander of @arka.works.london to explore how we might use AI tools to enhance our existing work methods.
In the morning we used Large Language Models (LLM) to review and condense large documents into more accessible information. We looked at how it could extract important information from lengthy briefs. This went way beyond how some of us currently use ChatGPT to check how to spell juxtaposition!
In the afternoon a few of us stayed on to explore text to image generation. We used MidJourney and RunDiffusion to generate rendered images from descriptions. We could see how this would complement hand sketching to explore concept ideas quickly. Later on in projects the tools have the potential to enhance and refine the visuals generated from computer models.
We were asked to generate an image by describing interior spaces of our current projects. Whilst these images were different, and some very humorous (Pandas in an atrium!) we could see how this might inform future projects.
This technology is not going away any time soon and overall as a practice we need to make sure we use it to enhance – rather than replace – the way work.

The sun finally started to shine on Monday which worked out well for a few of us who attended site to take part in a ground breaking ceremony. We admired the very clean spades and mounds of earth and tried our hardest to dig the 20m pile foundations but realised it would take too long and left it to the more experienced and talented ground workers (who cheated and used proper machinery!). Many thanks to Willmott Dixon for hosting and to Hertfordshire Constabulary for the invitation. It has been a long time coming but we are thrilled to see the project finally progressing to construction.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that from April 2024, Stephen Chown will be promoted to Director (architecture) of Vincent+Gorbing Ltd. Stephen has been with the practice since 2008 and in that time has overseen some key projects, has demonstrated a flair for design, excellent communication skills and a temperament befitting of his new role. Stephen is thrilled to be taking up this new role and looks forward to working with existing and new clients on some exciting projects going forward.
From May Stephen will also be representing Vincent + Gorbing as a member of the Stevenage Development Board.

We use visual walk-throughs to help our clients and consultant teams to understand the building design and show what the user experience when construction has finished.
We produced an animation for our clients the Hertfordshire Constabulary recently to show them their new headquarters.
The project has started on site and is being delivered by Willmott Dixon due to complete in Summer 2026.

We visited site this week to see progress on the new high-tech manufacturing facility for JDR Cable Systems. The impressive steel frame is progressing well with the towers taking shape on the former power station site.
The project is important for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. JDR manufacture highly engineered undersea cables connecting offshore wind farms to land. A very important building in the current world.
