Ice Cold: A Hip-Hop Jewelry History by Vikki Tobak examines how jewelry became one of Hip Hop’s most powerful visual languages—and a symbol of freedom within a society built to oppress. Through iconic pieces worn by artists like Slick Rick, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Cardi B, and many more, the book traces how chains, rings, grills, and pendants represented survival, self-determination, and visibility on one’s own terms. Tobak frames Hip Hop jewelry not as excess, but as resistance—turning adornment into archive and style into statement. Be part of our ongoing donation campaign for Black History Month! New episode today! We’re joined by journalist, author and curator @vikkitobak From her time at Payday Records in the early ‘90s to her days as a music journalist with published work in Vibe, ego trip, Paper, Rolling Stone and Mass Appeal, Vikki has been immersed in hip hop culture. That wealth of experience made it possible for her to publish landmark books “Contact High: A Visual History of Hip Hop” and “Ice Cold: A Hip Hop Jewelry History” (not to mention her book with LL Cool J “The Streets Win: 50 Years of Hip Hop Greatness”). Our conversation with Vikki focuses mainly on Contact High and its background but we also touch on some of the other work she has accomplished in her impressive career. Then we discuss her album pick for this episode - an album she reviewed for Vibe when it was released in 1994 - “My Life” by Mary J. Blige. Listen now at the link in our bio.

When I first started BOOK CLUB, it was pretty much for the opportunity to bring a friend to Philly and help provide a place and platform for important voices to discuss important work. Plus, when people say something like “Philly can’t have nice things” my response is “but why not?” Since we started the response and feedback has been phenomenal. To be able to present a forum where intellectualism is fun, books are celebrated and being smart is sexy are all perfect combos. And to able to host acclaimed talent from out of town like @_marcusjmoore & @dcharnas and to pair them up with local impresarios / intellectuals like @john_liberator & @urfavbrunette has been a dream. For the next installment of BOOK CLUB I am incredibly proud to invite to Philadelphia the legendary @vikkitobak , author of the award winning and critically acclaimed “Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop”. Contact High is the preeminent collection of Hip-Hop photography that capture arresting images of some of the culture’s most iconic artists from 2pac to Jay-Z to Queen Latifah and more. Contact High is more than a collection of photos and the stories behind them - it’s a celebration of artistic innovation, cultural resilience and the unbreakable spirit of Hip-Hop itself. Joining Vikki will be Joseph Patel AKA @jazzbeezy the Academy Award winning producer of the documentary “Summer of Soul” and producer of “Sly Lives!” who will be leading the discussion with Vikki and moderating the Q&A. And also I’m gonna play some records as well so there is that too haha. It’s all happening at @48recordbar on Wednesday April 30th. Tickets are on sale now but it’s limited capacity and we’re already selling out. We’d love to invite you down to this intimate and one of a kind event. And the following week (5/7) I’m excited to host yet another BOOK CLUB with special guest @adammansbach , author of “The Golem of Brooklyn” who will be sitting down with @dcharnas to talk about this important work of art. Stay cool my people and see you there!
