When I first started BOOK CLUB, it was pretty much for the opportunity to bring a friend to Philly and help provide a place and platform for important voices to discuss important work. Plus, when people say something like “Philly can’t have nice things” my response is “but why not?”
Since we started the response and feedback has been phenomenal. To be able to present a forum where intellectualism is fun, books are celebrated and being smart is sexy are all perfect combos. And to able to host acclaimed talent from out of town like
@_marcusjmoore &
@dcharnas and to pair them up with local impresarios / intellectuals like
@john_liberator &
@urfavbrunette has been a dream.
For the next installment of BOOK CLUB I am incredibly proud to invite to Philadelphia the legendary
@vikkitobak , author of the award winning and critically acclaimed “Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop”. Contact High is the preeminent collection of Hip-Hop photography that capture arresting images of some of the culture’s most iconic artists from 2pac to Jay-Z to Queen Latifah and more. Contact High is more than a collection of photos and the stories behind them - it’s a celebration of artistic innovation, cultural resilience and the unbreakable spirit of Hip-Hop itself.
Joining Vikki will be Joseph Patel AKA
@jazzbeezy the Academy Award winning producer of the documentary “Summer of Soul” and producer of “Sly Lives!” who will be leading the discussion with Vikki and moderating the Q&A. And also I’m gonna play some records as well so there is that too haha.
It’s all happening at
@48recordbar on Wednesday April 30th. Tickets are on sale now but it’s limited capacity and we’re already selling out. We’d love to invite you down to this intimate and one of a kind event.
And the following week (5/7) I’m excited to host yet another BOOK CLUB with special guest
@adammansbach , author of “The Golem of Brooklyn” who will be sitting down with
@dcharnas to talk about this important work of art.
Stay cool my people and see you there!
