GOLD STANDARD ALBUM CLUB
Weâre incredibly pleased to announce the first edition of GOLD STANDARD ALBUM CLUB. This has been in the works for years and, piggybacking off the success of the BOOK CLUB, weâre going into Season Two of this series with a new identity - the Gold Standard - as well as expanding our focus beyond books and looking at seminal works of art in the form of both albums and films. And for our very first listening, we are ecstatic to present âAfro Harpingâ by Dorothy Ashby.
Released in 1968, Dorothy Ashbyâs tour-de-force âAfro Harpingâ is the Magnum Opus of this legendary jazz harpist. A sound of soulful orchestrations, African percussion, electric harp both powerful and sublime, it sits right at the intersection of funk, soul, jazz and classical music. For decades this album was harvested by some of hip-hopâs greatest producers, having been sampled for many of the art formâs greatest tunes. But it is much more in its entirety. It is a testament to a woman artist who had a unique vision, and was able to coalesce her vision into a landmark and game-changing work of art.
Joining us in a discussion about Afro Harping, Dorothy Ashby and of the impact of women jazz musicians is harpist & composer @lizzie_harp along with the host of WRTI 90.1 FMs âEvening Jazzâ show, @thevelvetvoyce . As always @cosmobaker will provide the eveningâs soundtrack.
Each ticket purchased enters the holder for a chance at winning their very own copy of âAfro Harpingâ on vinyl to take home with them.
Tickets are on sale now for this intimate and heartfelt session and we canât wait to see you in attendance. And as the season unfolds we cannot wait to announce some of the extremely special guests that we have lined up to discuss their firsthand involvement and the stories behind some of your favorite records.
This is all happening at @48recordbar on Sunday May 31st at 7pm. See you there!

Sun May 10 - ANRI (ćé) has been one of the defining voices of Japanese city pop since the late 70s, blending AOR, funk, disco and coastal pop into records that still soundtrack summers decades later. Songs like âRemember Summer Days,â âCATâS EYE,â and âI Canât Stop the Lonelinessâ helped shape the sound of the era, and her albums remain staples for DJs and collectors around the world. With ANRI returning to the USA in May, weâre dedicating a full night to her music and the world around it.
On Sunday May 10, join me at Highball Crisis â every 2nd Sunday at @48recordbar â for a special âTribute to ANRIâ edition featuring playthroughs of Heaven Beach, Bi Ki Ni, COOOL, and Timely!! on vinyl, alongside selections of Japanese retro sounds: city pop, fusion, jazz funk, kayĹkyoku, synth pop and more. ĺ¤ăŽć°ĺăĺ°ăćŠă㍠(an early taste of summer vibes) âąď¸đď¸đđđââď¸

Soulquarianâs Nite is back this Sunday! This time we are doing a tribute to UK Neo Soul! Some of the most exciting music lately to me in RnB, Fusion Jazz, and Neo Soul has been coming from the UK and overseas, and whenever we have these nights artists like Cleo Sol, Tom Misch, Yazmin Lacey and Yussef Dayes are brought up, so it felt fitting to do an evening dedicated to spinning their records all night! Youâll also hear artists like Jorja Smith, Greentea Peng, Alfa Mist, Kokoroko, Little Simz, Elmine, Jordan Reiki, and even though they are in Sweden and Australia, we gotta bring Snoh Alegra and Haitus Kaiyote into the mix. Comment on some other artists you might like to hear! See yall there!
Tickets are available on DICE.FM
PEOPLE OF EARTH: We are so excited to welcome the creator/selector/vibes person that is @clubfriendsradioandrecords into our space for the first time ever this Sunday! Do drop by for âlong blends of atmospheric jungle and dubby techno with a possibility of my favorite vocal moments from the 90s.â
We will also be serving drinks.
