GOLD STANDARD ALBUM CLUB We’re incredibly pleased to announce the first edition of GOLD STANDARD ALBUM CLUB. This has been in the works for years and, piggybacking off the success of the BOOK CLUB, we’re going into Season Two of this series with a new identity - the Gold Standard - as well as expanding our focus beyond books and looking at seminal works of art in the form of both albums and films. And for our very first listening, we are ecstatic to present “Afro Harping” by Dorothy Ashby. Released in 1968, Dorothy Ashby’s tour-de-force “Afro Harping” is the Magnum Opus of this legendary jazz harpist. A sound of soulful orchestrations, African percussion, electric harp both powerful and sublime, it sits right at the intersection of funk, soul, jazz and classical music. For decades this album was harvested by some of hip-hop’s greatest producers, having been sampled for many of the art form’s greatest tunes. But it is much more in its entirety. It is a testament to a woman artist who had a unique vision, and was able to coalesce her vision into a landmark and game-changing work of art. Joining us in a discussion about Afro Harping, Dorothy Ashby and of the impact of women jazz musicians is harpist & composer @lizzie_harp along with the host of WRTI 90.1 FMs “Evening Jazz” show, @thevelvetvoyce . As always @cosmobaker will provide the evening’s soundtrack. Each ticket purchased enters the holder for a chance at winning their very own copy of “Afro Harping” on vinyl to take home with them. Hello from Philly my friends, where I’m still digging for records! This Friday, May 1st, I’m gonna play some of those records at my usual place in the sun Miami at @danteshifi where my friend @djgetlive will be coming in from NYC to join me for my monthly residency. Next weekend, Saturday May 9th I’m heading down to Dallas Texas for SOUND ADVICE, where I’ll be giving a talk and a listening of curated selections on The Sound of Philadelphia, its history and massive global influence from TSOP to the modern era in the listening room of @shyboy.hifi Later that night I’ll be playing an extended dance set also at @shyboy.hifi , where I’m joined by @stephenicarmona of which I can’t wait. Howdy y’all! Checking in! ✅ I’m back from a few weeks of travel, fun in the sun, and super amazing times. Spent some time in Mexico where I played the opening party for the @phishrivieramaya Festival. It was an amazing experience, great times with great people. From Cancun to Tulum where I spent some quality time with family / loved ones. From Mexico to Miami for my monthly at @danteshifi where I was joined by the homies @djskeez313 who tore the roof off the joint. Now I’m back down North experiencing this wonderful weather 🥶😭 but the days are getting longer and the sunshine brighter! ☀️ This coming weekend is for THE LOVERS and if you know me you know I am exactly that. And on Friday I’ll be heading to Brooklyn for a new joint playing at @barmilagrobk which is going to be a time to be had! TOMORROW: Thursday 10/23 is going to be a VERY SPECIAL ONE my friends. Cosmo Baker’s BOOK CLUB returns to @48recordbar with a special appearance by the legendary @arthurhbaker What is BOOK CLUB? It’s an intimate event where acclaimed authors and luminaries discuss the books they’ve written and the lives they’ve lived. Books of consequence, topics of merit, and people, events and philosophies that move the culture forward. Honestly it’s one of my most favorite event series that I’ve ever been involved with and I’m very very proud of it. Who is ARTHUR BAKER? Arthur is a legendary producer, the man behind the seminal classic “Planet Rock” and many more timeless tunes, a man who single-handedly changed the trajectory of hip-hop and dance music. His work with everyone from Afrika Bambaataa to Bob Dylan, from New Order to New Edition (who he signed to their first record deal) is just part of his historic run in the musical, and cultural, landscape. Arthur is coming to Philly to discuss his newly released memoir “Looking For The Perfect Beat” in an intimate discussion with Philly’s own @lolakinks4ever - scholar, DJ, activist and all around amazing figure in the Philly scene. Arthur will also be joining me and will be playing records from his own personal collection of classic vinyl. Sounds pretty amazing to me to be honest. Copies of Arthur’s book will be on sale tomorrow night as well. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to present such cool (IMO) experiences to the city that I love, and I hope you will enjoy yourselves as well.
