After going into social media hibernation end of 2025, a month was spent in Indonesia, the place my grandparents come from. A journey long in the making, and one that can only be described as overwhelming that made me feel all the feels.
As a third-generation Indo-Dutchie, I spent my time exploring for what was never passed down: language, stories, and context. From Jakarta to Bogor, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Bali, I came to understand, even if only partially, what Indisch zwijgen leaves behind, and what reconnecting can look like 💜
The coming year, there will be more experimentation with (long-form) content on my own website. For those who are interested, a written more in-depth recap on this journey is now available there as a blog, available in Dutch, English, and Bahasa Indonesia.

I still owe London a recap…
Usually when I’m here, I’m on my own running from record shop to record shop, bus to tube, always chasing time. But this trip was different.
My beloved Jim came with me and that changed the pace. We moved slow, without a plan, walking, eating, breathing. Somewhere between Hyde Park and the autumn air I found a new obsession: Malay food. A community I hadn’t really seen before, and as someone with Indo roots, it hit close. It felt like coming home, like finding a taste that understood me.
Anyway, there was a reason I was in town: Phonox, TNQ label night. Two years ago I played there for the first time, my first gig outside NL, nervous AF. This time it felt different, very freeing. The kind of night where the crowd gets everything you’re trying to say with sound. Phonox really is home turf for TNQ.
Lately it’s been nonstop, project to project, barely a moment to stand still. But this wonderful memory deserves a share and a pause ✨
ADE 2025 was a whirlwind of conversations, archives, drum machines, panels, and B2Bs. From the Planetarium and Felix Meritis to the basement of Rushhour. From Echobox to Open Source Radio, I’m taking home inspiration, crew love and community. Moving forward with the conviction that hip-hop and club culture belong not on the margins, but at the heart of our cultural landscape.

Vanity Roxane is a DJ by night and a cultural advisor by day. Her work bridges the gap between heritage, policy, and creating – with a special focus on hip-hop, sound system culture, and gender equality. She is the founder of @_thefemdem_ , a collective to empower womxn+, ruling the soundwaves.
Here, writer and activist Saina Salarian talks with Vanity Roxane about her passion for music and community, and how the two are intertwined. They talk about crate-digging, The FemDem, cultural heritage, grassroots communities, and what she has envisioned for her program at U? on Saturday, 8 November.

The North Quarter has always held a special place in my heart. A label that shows how soulful drum & bass can be shaped, how genres can connect, and how a community can grow around a sound of its own. Every label night, whether I’m visiting as a listener or behind the decks as a DJ, always leaves me inspired.
That’s why tonight feels so special: playing alongside this amazing line-up in London. Not only because this city is the epicenter of bass music, but because here I get to be part of a movement that keeps fueling my passion.

North Sea Jazz 2025 ☑️
When I was growing up, my uncle @peeano.latumahina always talked about this one festival, that really lit him up: North Sea Jazz. If his stories taught me anything, it was that only the sickest musicians played there. Now, 30+ years later, I got to play it myself. Wild how life works sometimes…
Big gigs aside, what really sparks joy is being able to move between different corners of the spectrum. From the soulful energy of North Sea Jazz to DnB with The North Quarter fam, all the way to gritty 140 dubstep sets at nights like Reload, Sonicboom, Give it Dub. Same roots, different flavors. That, to me, is the biggest win 🙏🏽

Er zijn gigs. En dan heb je GIGS.
Deze zomer speel ik op North Sea Jazz. Op mijn verjaardag nog wel. Een mijlpaal waarvan ik nooit had verwacht dat die zou aandienen…
Een aantal van jullie vroegen me al: ga je daar DnB draaien? Het antwoord is: hiphop. De boeking kwam er als resultaat na mijn set vorig jaar op Down The Rabbit Hole, waar ik met team Open Source Radio de Rex-stage mocht openen. Blijkbaar bleef wat ik daar deed hangen ;)
Ben heel blij met NSJ, maar wat me het meest blij maakt is dat er ruimte is voor alles wat ik doe. Dat deep dubstep sets naast soulful dnb/jungle en hiphop kunnen bestaan, zonder dat ik een nieuwe alias hoeft beginnen. Dat is voor mij de grootste win.

This summer, I’m playing North Sea Jazz. On my birthday, no less. A milestone I never really expected…
Some of you already asked: are you playing DnB there? The answer is: hiphop. The booking came off the back of my set at Down The Rabbit Hole last year, where I opened the Rex stage with the Open Source Radio crew. Apparently, what I did there stuck.
I’m really happy about NSJ. But what makes me happiest is that there’s space for all the sounds I love. That I get to play deep dubstep alongside soulful dnb/jungle and hiphop, without having to start a new alias or pick a lane.
That’s the real win for me.
