🚢🦠 Concerned about the recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic? Here’s what you need to know before you set sail from Florida or anywhere else. Public health experts, including USF Public Health College Dean Dr. Sten Vermund, say the risk remains low, but awareness is key. Hantavirus is rare and usually tied to rodent exposure, not person-to-person contact or cruise travel. This is the first-ever cruise ship outbreak, and investigations are ongoing. 🔍 What is hantavirus? A rodent-borne virus that can cause serious illness, but is uncommon in humans. Most cases happen when people breathe in dust from areas where infected rodents have been. 🛑 Symptoms to watch for: - Fever, fatigue, muscle aches - Headache, nausea, abdominal pain - In severe cases: shortness of breath, respiratory distress 🛡️ How to stay safe: - Avoid areas where rodents may be present - Practice good hand hygiene - Seek medical care if symptoms develop after possible exposure #usfresearch #publichealth #hantavirus #cruisesafety #USFHealth #science #travel @usfcoph

Through industry-sponsored capstone projects, USF biomedical engineering seniors are transforming ideas into real medical devices that tackle pressing health challenges. 🤘 This year, fourteen teams wowed faculty and industry partners with prototypes designed to improve patient care and advance clinical practices. “Our students are developing products that solve real health-related issues,” says Dr. Souheil Zekri, director of capstone design. “We set ourselves apart by creating immersive, team-based experiences with actual industry clients.” From collaborating with companies like PainTEQ to designing devices that use healing cells for back joint repair, our students are pushing boundaries and making a difference. Senior Samantha Visconti shares: “It was intimidating at first, but you learn, adapt, and grow as you work with your team and industry partner.” #usfresearch #BiomedicalEngineering #USFInnovation #CapstoneSuccess @usfengineering @usfhealthmedicine @usouthflorida @painteq

USF researchers are exploring how immersive tools like augmented reality (AR) can transform learning for children. However, most AR tech is designed for adults. “Developers aren’t thinking about how children will engage with these products, which results in a frustrating experience for children,” says Julia Woodward, assistant professor at the Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing. Her latest study reveals that kids ages 9–12 interact with AR in ways that are far more intuitive and exploratory than adults, but the technology often doesn’t meet them where they are. While AR can make STEM concepts come alive and reduce issues like motion sickness, the design gap means young learners aren’t getting the full benefit. #USFResearch #AugmentedReality #STEMeducation #Innovation #FutureOfLearning #EdTech #ResearchMatters @usfbellini

Sunrise on Virginia Key: USF researchers are back on deck, launching a new science expedition to uncover the secrets of South Florida’s changing oceans. 🚢🌊 Partnering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the University of Miami, the USF team joins scientists from five institutions aboard the Walton Smith, ready to collect vital data that reveals what’s happening beneath the waves. Sebastian Di Geronimo, a USF College of Marine Science grad, veteran of 37 research cruises and scientific technician in Dr. Frank Muller-Karger’s lab, analyzes seawater samples to track the health and biodiversity of Florida’s marine ecosystems. “We can use samples like this to look at which organisms are in the water, study how productive they are, and measure traits like size, color, and their genetic composition,” he explains. This work is part of the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON), which is a decade-long, nationwide effort to monitor ocean health and spot changes invisible to the naked eye. Every seven weeks, the Southeast MBON team sets sail to gather data that helps protect our coasts for future generations. #USFResearch #MarineScience #OceanHealth #ResearchImpact #GoBulls #ScienceAtSea @usouthflorida @marinebiodiversitynetwork @usfmarinescience
