We are three weeks out from something really special. A free event for LGBTQ+ youth ages 16–24 at Arts Asylum on June 4th. Free food. Free performance. A Draw Your Future session where they map their dreams.
We have the DeBruce Foundation behind us. We have The Trevor Project behind us. We held a focus group at UMKC — over 20 LGBTQ+ youth showed up and said “Please do this.”
So we did everything right.
Then we sent handcrafted emails to KC teachers asking them to spread the word and bring students.
Guess how many responded.
Zero.
Let that sink in. These kids exist in your city. They need to know they are loved, supported, and that their future can be drawn and seen.

My mother had to protect me before either of us had language for who I was.
She fielded calls from coaches who caught me kissing girls.
She explained why her little “girl” wanted full army gear instead of a princess costume at age 4.
And one day, my 3rd grade teacher called to tell her she believed I was “a homosexual” and needed psychiatric help to fix me.
Imagine being a mother getting that call.
This reel is for the moms who loved us the best they could inside a world that taught them fear before understanding.
And it’s for every LGBTQ+ kid who wondered if they would ever be safe enough to become themselves out loud.
That’s one of the reasons I created Polly’s Army of One.

Every time I train with @zavierfine I question my life choices somewhere around rep 14. 😂💀
But honestly? This matters.
Polly’s Army of One is physical. I’m on the floor, up again, dancing, shifting characters, moving through decades of life in one body. And at 68, I’ve learned something important:
You gotta train for the life you want to live.
So while Zavier is over there trying to quietly destroy me with “just one more rep”… I’m over here getting stronger for the stage, for the future, and for the wild beautiful life I still want to keep creating.
Lean. Mean. Emotionally dramatic. Slightly sore.
Let’s go. 🔥

Friday in the theater. Working the characters.Trying to make every moment true.
And wow… it’s amazing how quickly the inner critic wants a starring role. 🙈
The older I get, the more I realize this:Creating anything beautiful requires compassion for yourself while you’re still becoming it.
Not after you get it right.Not after the applause.Now.
So today I’m practicing lines, adjusting characters, forgetting lines, trying again… and reminding myself that love has to be part of the process too.

The theater is hard today. 🎭
As an illustrator, I just listen and draw — the pictures do the talking. But acting? Being fully IN the moment, no marker to hide behind?
That’s a whole different kind of brave.
And honestly… it’s a metaphor for everything.
The moment you stop managing life from the sidelines and actually step into it — that’s where the real stuff happens.
I’m rehearsing for Polly’s Army of One and today the theater is teaching me more than I expected.
Show up. Stay present. That’s the work. 🖊️✨
