Congratulations to @UMassChan Assoc. Professor Dr. Marcus Ruscetti on receiving the prestigious 2026 Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Prize — which recognizes scientists who are accelerating cures for cancer through innovative research.
As part of the prize, Dr. Ruscetti will receive $750,000 to advance research focused on how senescent cells in the liver — cells that stop dividing due to stress or aging — create an immune-suppressive environment that enables pancreatic cancer to spread.
Ruscetti hopes to develop innovative treatment strategies that incorporate therapies targeting senescent cells or their inflammatory profiles to not only treat advanced disease but also potentially prevent metastasis in cancer patients.

Years after putting her own college dreams on hold to raise quadruplets, Maureen Whitcomb will cross the commencement stage alongside her son Bryce — the last of her four children to graduate from UMass Lowell.
Maureen represents something powerful: that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. “It doesn’t matter how old you are,” Whitcomb says. “You can do it.” 🎓

After seven years working as an athletic trainer, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student Katie Crawford, MS, pivoted to a nursing career, enrolling in the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing's MS-DNP program at UMass Chan.
"My big reason for becoming a nurse is my mom," said Crawford, whose mother was an ICU nurse for around 30 years. "I really love thinking critically and having to use my brain. I love working at the bedside in critical care and being the person at somebody's bedside during the worst day of their life."
Born in Framingham, Crawford earned an undergraduate degree in athletic training at Sacred Heart University and a master's degree in exercise science at Auburn University. Crawford is in the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Track and works in the ICU at UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus.

UMass Chan’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association hosted 38 undergraduate premedical students from UMass Amherst on Saturday for MAPS (Minority Association of Premedical Students) Day.
Activities included a school tour; an anatomy lab experience led by Alexandra Wink, PhD, and Jenna Watson, PhD; a neurology case study; a panel discussion and a mixer.
