🎻🎉 Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the @gamersymphonyumd , a 150-member UMD student organization heavy with #ScienceTerp student musicians and singers! “I don’t think it’s just the size of CMNS; there’s a huge overlap of people in STEM also doing music in general,” said biological sciences Ph.D. student Theresa Menna. “For me, there’s this comforting similarity in music and science where you’re putting puzzle pieces together, tinkering, figuring out what can be tweaked to improve performance. Experimentation is a big part of both endeavors.” Join GSO's 20th anniversary concert this Sunday (5/17) at the Clarice Performing Arts Center in person (reserve a free ticket first) or listen on Twitch! Meltwater flowing off ice shelves changes the ocean in ways that drive even faster melting—and most global climate projections don’t even include it. New research by Atmospheric and Oceanic Science's Madeleine Youngs found that when ice shelves melt into the ocean, the resulting freshwater weakens the cold barrier layer that normally blocks warm deep-ocean currents from reaching the ice. That allows more warm water in, which causes more melting, which further weakens the barrier. The cycle compounds itself—and may even contribute to sea level rise as much as direct atmospheric warming does. Now, Madeleine and her team are building high-res simulations to track which ice shelves are closest to a tipping point. Link in bio! #SeaIce #Climate #Ocean #Antarctic #UMD

@neuratumd grad Kiyana N'Gouemo's next stop is @niaaanews for an @nihgov postbac before applying to medical school! During undergrad, Kiyana worked in Biology Professor Ricardo Araneda's lab, conducting research on olfactory and social behavior paradigms. Kiyana earned High Honors in Neuroscience and completed the @umd_gphscholars program, receiving training in public health, equity and population-level health perspectives. #UMDgrad #Neuroscience #PublicHealth #Postbac #MedSchool

These lucky @univofmaryland students birded for course credit this semester 🐦‍⬛🦅🦆 In BSCI238A: Ornithology, a @sticsumd course taught by @bsciumd senior Joshua Johnson, students learned about the biology of birds. The course was in high demand and filled up within minutes of opening enrollment. Joshua designed the course to be accessible to students who know little about birding or biology, with students enrolling from @umdcs , @umd_chbe and @umd_art . “I’m not going to be there their whole lives,” Joshua said. “I want them to be able to go out and bird independently with confidence.” Link in bio to read more! #Birding #Ornithology #Biology #UMD

Underwater noise is hard on marine mammals. But what about fish and their spineless cousins, invertebrates? According to Biology Professor Emeritus Arthur Popper, it's long past time to protect these animals, especially as deep-sea mining adds more noise to the din. Read more about his recent findings at the link in our bio! #Noise #DeepSea #MarineLife #UMD

Hannah McCright's next stop is grad school at @physicscolumbia ! During undergrad, Hannah loved participating in outreach through Maryland Day, Physics is Phun and the Insect Zoo—in addition to her research with @fermilab and UMD's Electron Ring. "[At Columbia], I am excited to continue working on the hunt for sterile neutrinos (a possible elusive fourth kind of neutrino) and to help broaden the search for other BSM (Beyond the Standard Model) candidates, until we finally hammer out all of our anomalies and better understand our universe at a fundamental level!" #Graduate #Physics #ScienceTerp #UMD

🖍️✂️✏️The Catalyst team facilitated activities for @baltcityschools students at @newsongacad yesterday! Fourth-graders learned computational thinking and pattern recognition through coloring activities, binary bead initial bracelets and cryptography. “I loved seeing a concept ‘click’ for some of the kids,” said @umdcs and @smithundergrad sophomore Kashvi Tiwari, the Catalyst student staff member who facilitated the activities. “I learned more about what it’s actually like to teach younger kids and the level at which you need to keep them engaged, which will be helpful when I teach for the CompSciConnect this summer.” #K12 #STEMeducation #Community #Outreach

Spring cleaning turns up some throwback photos of @univofmaryland Professor Emeriti whose research continues to revolutionize pest management to this day. 👑Dr. Barbara Throne pictured in front of an illustration of one of her study organisms, termites. She is a true termite queen. 🪴Dr. Michael Raupp caught in his element studying ornamental plant pests. 🫢 Dr. Galen Dively in a surprising different look. Instead of sporting tie-dye and a sun hat surrounded by corn and their pests he is in a suit and tie taking a professional head shot. A big THANK YOU to these amazing scientists for their dedication to entomology then and now.
