These lucky @univofmaryland students birded for course credit this semester 🐦‍⬛🦅🦆 In BSCI238A: Ornithology, a @sticsumd course taught by @bsciumd senior Joshua Johnson, students learned about the biology of birds. The course was in high demand and filled up within minutes of opening enrollment. Joshua designed the course to be accessible to students who know little about birding or biology, with students enrolling from @umdcs , @umd_chbe and @umd_art . “I’m not going to be there their whole lives,” Joshua said. “I want them to be able to go out and bird independently with confidence.” Link in bio to read more! #Birding #Ornithology #Biology #UMD

Tomorrow (5/1), @bsciumd senior Joshua Johnson is taking over our story! Tune in to see Joshua teach the student-initiated course (STIC) on ornithology that he developed. Then, he’ll head to MATH416: Applied Harmonic Analysis and BSCI370: Principles of Evolution. After classes, Joshua will meet up with @jamminatmaryland to practice guitar and singing! Follow along on our story and ask Joshua any questions! #ScienceTerp #Mathematics #Biology #CollegeLife

Happy Earth Day! 🌎🌳🎉 Tune into @pbs tonight to watch 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨—which tells the story of a family’s efforts to bring back and provide a haven for species that were once abundant in southern England. Based on the bestselling book by Isabella Tree, the film was produced by Dr. Sean B. Carroll—distinguished University Professor of Biology at the University of Maryland.

🎉Amy Goodman, @bsciumd undergraduate student & Lamp lab member, is making a splash with her honors research, “Is Straw Addition an Effective Management Strategy to Increase Odonata Abundance and Diversity Within Farm Ponds?” She earned an Honors College Grant this semester. With this support she can continue to dive into her farm pond experiments @wyerec in April. Well done, Amy!

research 🤝 rock @bsciumd major Cadence Michels is doing meaningful research on respiratory disease—and drawing unexpected inspiration from her life as a musician. Working with @umdcbmg 's Louisa Wu and @umdbioe 's Gregg Duncan, Cadence recently helped develop a protease that could help restore healthier airway conditions in patients with asthma, COPD and cystic fibrosis. 🎉Award winning research coming out of Fritz Lab! Congratulations to... Entomology graduate student @benespana who earned third place in the @virginiamosquitocontrol 's student competition for his poster, “Landscape features and phenology influence relative cryptic Culex abundance along urbanization gradients in Eastern North America.” Last week, Ben brought his research from the poster board to the lecture hall giving an in-person talk at the Association's annual conference. & Entomology undergraduate honors student Bhargav Srinivasan ( @umdcs & @bsciumd ) who received second place in the student poster competition at the International Plant and Animal Genome Conference. His award-winning poster, “Correlations between read depth, copy number variation, and Bt resistance in Helicoverpa zea” focused on his undergraduate thesis work. 👏Way to go, Ben and Bhargav!

🔬🪲Harriet Harris wrapped up BSCI481 last semester, a core requirement for entomology graduate students. This course is a deep dive into insect morphology, systematics and the evolution of insects. Throughout the course Harriet and fellow students built their own insect collections to reinforce and demonstrate what they have learned. Harriet’s favorite find was the stunning Spotted-winged Antlion (Dendroleon obsoletus). Now, with a collection under their belt and ento's vast teaching collection at their disposal, Harriet is excited to TA @bsciumd 120, introducing undergrads to the major groups of insects, their natural history, and their relationships with humans and their environment. Who knows, maybe one of their students will leave with a favorite insect too!🦋🔬 photo credit: Yaich and Sherwood (last two photos)

#Terps, this spring join go behind the glass of the remarkable Doepkens Insect Collection to experience the process of curation. Started by Maryland farmer and entomophile William Doepkens, with contributions from his family, the collection contains 12 boxes, consisting of 735 specimens in 8 orders (Odonata, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, and Diptera). In 2025, the Doepkens family generously loaned the collection to the Department of Entomology. This coming spring, join Professor Bill Lamp and Yasmine Helbling for BSCI328C to help tell the story of William Doepkens, his farm, and the insects that lived there by designing and implementing an educational display. When complete the curated collection will be exhibited on the first floor of the Plant Sciences Building.
