Marine Carpuat, an associate professor of computer science at @univofmaryland , studies natural language processing with a focus on multilingual #AI and cross-language communication. Her work examines how AI systems can help people communicate across languages while addressing the technical and human challenges that remain when translation tools are used in real-world settings, including medical settings where errors can affect how patients understand symptoms, medication or care instructions. Ruohan Gao, a @univofmaryland assistant professor of computer science, is working to help virtual worlds feel closer to how people experience real life, through sight, sound, and, eventually, touch. “We want to mimic, and maybe enhance, how humans hear, see and feel the world,” said Gao, an Gao is exploring that idea through SonoWorld, a system that turns a single image into an explorable 3D audiovisual environment with spatial sound aligned to the visual scene. As users move through the virtual world, sounds shift with them, making the environment feel more connected to real-world spaces. Gao developed the project with Distinguished University Professor Ming C. Lin and UMD computer science Ph.D. students Derong Jin and Xiyi Chen. Their paper will be presented at the IEEE/Computer Vision Foundation Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in June. Read more: Link in bio

@UMDCS ' Michelle Mazurek, an associate professor of computer science and director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center, is leading a TRAILS-supported research project examining the “charisma trap” in human-AI interaction. The study explores how users can mistake a chatbot’s professional tone, confidence and polished delivery for reliability, even when the system may produce biased or inaccurate information. The work suggests that trust in AI can increase after users try and fail to “break” a system, even when they do not detect underlying issues. Read more: Link in Bio

@univofmaryland students and recent alumni developing startups through the Mokhtarzada Hatchery program presented their work on May 4 during the initiative’s fifth annual Demo Day. This year’s teams, Capy’s Journey, Cube, SenseGuard and ThinkEx, showcased ventures focused on mindfulness practices for children, group-based savings, vacant property monitoring and AI-supported research. Established in 2021 by UMD alumni Haroon Mokhtarzada, Idris Mokhtarzada and Zeki Mokhtarzada, the Hatchery supports early-stage student ventures with funding, mentorship and workspace in the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering. Milijana Surbatovich, an assistant professor of computer science at the @univofmaryland , has received a National Science Foundation (@nsfgov ) Faculty Early Career Development Program award to advance research on intermittent computing platforms. The award, expected to total about $680,000 over five years, will support Surbatovich’s work on battery-free devices that harvest energy from sources such as light, motion or radio waves. Her project focuses on developing theory and practical tools to help these systems operate correctly and securely despite repeated shutdowns caused by unpredictable energy supply. Link in bio.

Three @univofmaryland computer science majors, Rajveer Singh, Ananth Sriram and Neel Mokaria, took first place at the Ironsite Hackathon with an AI-powered dashboard designed to identify safety risks in construction footage. Over 36 hours, the team developed a system that processes video from construction sites and flags potential hazards, including missing safety gear, unsafe postures and proximity to heavy equipment. Their approach combined industry-standard models with additional verification using large language and visual models to improve reliability. Read more: go.umd.edu/Ironsite-5-2026
