And the award goes to the muon! 🏆 The 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics recognized three generations of the Muon g-2 experiment, which provided the world’s most precise measurement to date of the muon. The experiment began at @CERN in the 1970s, shifted to @BrookhavenLab in the 1990s and concluded at Fermilab with final publication in 2025. These Muon g‑2 experiments pushed the limits of precision to measure the muon’s magnetic moment with ever-increasing precision. Even the smallest discrepancy from expectations could reveal brand‑new physics beyond the Standard Model. In 2025, the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab announced the most precise measurement of the muon’s magnetic moment ever made. Fermilab scientist Chris Polly was among the members of the scientific collaborations who accepted the prize. Others included: Bradley Lee Roberts of Boston University, William M. Morse of Brookhaven National Laboratory and David Hertzog of the University of Washington. The prize was presented at a ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Congratulations to the Muon g‑2 collaborations! 🏆 A tiny elementary particle called the muon has won a big prize, the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Three generations of the Muon #gminus2 experiment — beginning @CERN , advancing @BrookhavenLab , and culminating at Fermilab — were honored with this award, recognizing decades of groundbreaking precision physics. The three generations of Muon g-2 experiments were designed to measure the magnetic moment of the muon with ever-increasing precision, exploring the quantum realm where particles briefly appear and vanish — and where even tiny deviations could point to entirely new laws of nature outside of the current Standard Model of Particle Physics. The latest and most precise measurement of the muon’s magnetic moment was announced by Fermilab in 2025. #DidYouKnow that, in coordination with six other national labs, Fermilab is developing AI tools to increase the efficiency and innovation in particle accelerators as part of the Department of Energy’s #GenesisMission? Particle accelerators are some of the most powerful tools that humanity has ever built, playing a critical role in advancing discoveries in physics, chemistry, materials science and biology. But accelerators are also incredibly complicated. They take years to build and rely on hundreds of interconnected systems working in harmony to deliver particle beams. To help address this complexity, Fermilab is joining six other national labs on MOAT, or the Multi-Office particle Accelerator Team. MOAT is creating a unified advanced artificial intelligence system that is incorporated into the entire life cycle of particle accelerators to increase efficiency and innovation. MOAT is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, a historic effort to accelerate scientific discovery by advancing AI. #Flashback to yesterday's beam signing! ✍️ This week, members of the local community joined leaders from Fermilab, @SanfordLab , @CERN and partners from around the world to sign one of the first structural steel beams that will be installed nearly a mile underground for the DUNE far detector. As DUNE moves into this next phase, we’re grateful to everyone in Illinois and South Dakota who continues to welcome and champion this groundbreaking science. Thank you for being part of the journey. The future of neutrino research is being built right under our feet. #DUNEscience #Fermilab #SanfordLab #LeadSD #SouthDakota #neutrinos #ParticlePhysics #MilestoneForScience

Today in Lead, South Dakota, leaders from the Department of @energy , members of Congress, Fermilab, @CERN , @SanfordLab and the local community gathered to mark a major milestone for @DUNEscience . Attendees signed one of the first structural steel beams that will be lowered nearly a mile underground to build the framework for DUNE’s far detector — the start of 10 million pounds of steel moving below the surface. These structures will eventually support the massive cryostats that hold tens of thousands of tons of liquid argon for neutrino detection. Today’s milestone symbolizes the extraordinary international effort behind DUNE as together we work toward the next frontier of neutrino science. CERN has provided an in-kind contribution of 10 million pounds of steel, marking the first time it has invested in infrastructure for an experiment outside Europe. More than 1,500 scientists and engineers from over 35 countries are contributing to DUNE’s design, construction and science mission. This moment represents a pivotal step toward building the underground detectors in South Dakota — and toward unlocking new answers about our universe. The future of neutrino science is taking shape, beam by beam. Read more at the link in our bio. #DUNEscience #Fermilab #CERN #SanfordLab #DOE #neutrinos #physics #ParticlePhysics #MilestoneForScience

@DUNEScience is tackling some of the biggest questions in the universe — including why we’re here at all. 🔍✨ DUNE is designed to investigate three cosmic mysteries: 🔹 Could neutrinos be the reason the universe is made of matter? 🔹 Is there physics beyond the Standard Model? 🔹 What really happens inside an exploding star? Understanding neutrinos doesn’t just expand our fundamental knowledge — it could spark new advances in national security, communications and medical imaging. Today we're marking a major milestone: one of the first structural beams for the far detector's cryostat is being lowered nearly a mile below the surface. At the same time, we’re celebrating the progress being made toward discoveries that could reshape our understanding of the cosmos and the science that makes DUNE worth building #DUNEscience #Fermilab #CERN #SanfordLab #neutrinos#physics #ParticlePhysics #MilestoneForScience

A mile underground, DUNE is taking shape. ⚙️🌌 This week, at @SanfordLab , one of the first structural beams for the far detector's cryostat is being lowered nearly a mile beneath the surface. Each beam — part of an in kind contribution from @CERN — is precisely engineered and placed to support one of the world’s most advanced neutrino detectors. 🔧 With more than 1,500 collaborators from 35+ countries, DUNE is truly a global effort. And now, the experiment is starting to come together piece by piece. 🧩 Learn more at the link in our bio. #DUNEscience #Fermilab #CERN #SanfordLab #neutrinos#physics #ParticlePhysics #MilestoneForScience

Catching ghost particles isn't easy, that's why @DUNEScience is building one of the most advanced neutrino detectors ever created. At the far site in South Dakota @SanfordLab , DUNE’s massive detectors will record neutrino interactions with unprecedented precision. Each detector module will be immersed in nearly 17,000 tons of liquid argon, kept at about –300°F inside two giant cryostats. 🥶 The steel being lowered this week is one of the structural beams that will make up these cryostats. And yes — all of this will be installed a mile underground. On this May the 4th, we’re celebrating a different kind of force — the global scientific collaboration behind @DUNEscience ! 🤝 DUNE is an international collaboration with more than 1,500 scientists from over 35 countries all working together to build an experiment that will paint a clear picture of our universe. 🌌 This week, DUNE enters a defining new phase as one of the first structural steel beams — which will support the cryostat for the far detector — is lowered nearly a mile underground at @SanfordLab in South Dakota. The 10 million pounds of steel are an in-kind contribution from @CERN . This is the first time CERN has invested in infrastructure for an experiment outside Europe. This is the moment the detector begins to take shape, starting a new chapter for neutrino science. Stay tuned this week as we dig deeper into the next era of DUNE.
