On April 2nd the Artemis II Mission Orion spacecraft carried Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen with crewmates Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch on an eight minute lift into space, the first stage of the first crewed mission in over 50 years to orbit the Moon. The world watched this historic moment via live-stream, and our student telescope operators viewing the sky from THUNDERBIRD SOUTH, our remote-operated telescope in Chile, caught these amazing photos of the launch! Thank you to our student operators A. Schildhorn (UBC), Sean Heakes (UBC), A. Kauffman (UBC), C. Hemmann (UBC), S. Chan (UBC); and supervisors A. Boley (UBC) and D. D. Balam (DAO/NRC). https://thunderbirdsouth.phas.ubc.ca/ @ubcscience @universityofbc @ubcgss @alumniubc @ubcastronomyclub @ubcphyssoc @ubcappliedscience @ubcengineers @ubcengineering @ubcmsl @ubcsics #jeremyhansen #astronomy #artemisII #moon #telescope

Want to meet a Canadian Nobel Laureate in Physics? SFU Physics and UBC Physics & Astronomy are pleased to announce a free public evening with Nobel Prize-winning physicist Donna Strickland at SFU Harbour Centre on March 27th, 2026 from 7-9pm. This public event will include a presentation followed by a Q&A session. A self-described lover of lasers, Donna will talk about her prize winning research of lasers, that while delivering short pulses of light, will knock electrons off of their atoms! Don't miss this amazing opportunity to meet this incredible scientist and national treasure. https://phas.ubc.ca/extreme-light-unlocking-power-super-fast-lasers vsb39 @RichmondSD38 surrey_schools @westvancouverschools @nvsd44 @schooldistrict43 @portmoodyblues43 @portmoodyibsecondary @ladner_EI_PAC @burnabyschools @langleyschools #physics #nobelprize #science

Time Magazine's recent article on SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell tells of SpaceX's plans to "expand its Starlink internet constellation from its current 9,400 satellites to 20,000" and its recent request to get licensing for a mega-constellation of "up to a million AI satellites". This ambitious and unilateral plan is concerning: orbital lanes at 300 mile altitudes above earth are already crowded. As UBC Astronomer Dr. Aaron Boley explains, "Satellites cannot stop, go, and make large turns like a car...altogether, the collision potential on orbit is a serious concern". Read more about a future as visioned by SpaceX and some potential consequences for space flight, space use and space junk here: /article/2026/03/26/gwynne-shotwell-profile/ @ubcscience @ubcphyssoc @ubcastronomyclub @ubcgss @triumflab @ubcengineering @ubcappliedscience @ubcalumniubc @ubcengineers @ubcmsl
