Safely packaged in paper wool from printer @superbanco.riso , this A5 format booklet presents a typeface for the signage of Ouessant, an island of Brittany, France. A local committee invited @lucas.bihan and @gwennina.moigne.studio to visit the island and design a font for local signage. The two were conceptually and literally blown away by Ouessant’s rough weather, and decided to reference their impressions from the surrounding in a typeface based on the lettering of one of the older signs they found on their hikes. “One of the most widely used typefaces in the world is actually a legacy of 18th century aesthetics, representing the spirit of late Baroque design, architecture, fashion and society.”2023 specimen for Baskerville Neo by @stormtypefoundry . František Štorm’s version of the famous transitional serif is a legacy itself: in 1999, he released a version based on a 14pt font from around 1769. In the years since, he added and released more versions based on different sizes and different sources. Reading Time is @britt_moericke thinking out loud about typography. No. 2, December 2024, is about the relations and differences between conventions, rules and tradition. Her analogy with mayonnaise is fascinating. As convention has it, its invention was serendipity at work when a cook improvised a sauce for which he did not have all ingredients. Starting as an improvisation, it lived on as a famous set of unbreakable rules. Breaking the recipe gave birth to a new set of rules. Moericke avoids getting trapped in mayo philosophy but sticks to her story (rules = baking, conventions = cooking) and then takes a left ending up with revolutionary-turned-traditionalist Tschichold – a jump of 172 years by turning the page. One of the last releases of 2024 but certainly not one of the least. Merwede, released by @boldmonday and designed by Titus Schulz. Following a long career as a book typographer, he put all his experience into this debut typeface. I think I heard a similar story before about a Dutch typographer who became type designer and that one worked out really well.Merwede looks completely ready for all your demanding book typography. New: specimen (three posters and a chocolate bar) for Granda, the latest release by @tdfoundry , designed by @radek_lukasiewicz . Granada is a lovey sans in nine weights plus italics in two styles (leaning forward and leaning backward).Available as 27 static fonts a la carte, or one variable font to rule them all.Edible specimens are a collector’s dilemma: eat and lose the specimen or keep and lose the specimen as it will perish at some point.
