“What’s it like to be in a relationship with someone from such a different culture?” my friend asks. “You don’t have a problem with the food? The music?”
“There we go”, I think. The food? Delicious! The music? Beautiful! And honestly, there’s so much to learn: from the warmth of his culture, from the way they look at life.
But the question feels surface-level. Yes, there are differences, but they show up more deeply. In language, for instance. Not just the words themselves, but how they’re used, what they mean. Farsi is a high-context language; Dutch is low-context. That gap can leave us misunderstanding each other. When it happens, we’ve learned to just say, “Language problem,” and let it go.
Two years ago, during ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’, I learned a lot. Not only about Iran, but about how truly different our worlds are. I felt guilty for not knowing more, for not fully understanding what people there go through. But Saber said, “Please don’t feel guilty. Everyone on this planet should have a life like you.” And he’s right.
Still, I often feel caught between these two worlds. I’m not saying we don’t have problems here, but at least we know there won’t be bombs falling on our heads tonight.
The other world: Iran. It’s hard to find news that isn’t distorted. Saber and my Iranian friends are my most trusted sources. So yes, I may know more —or different things— than many people around me. So next time you see me, just ask.
While I might smile and chat lightly with my Dutch friends, inside there’s a constant tension. I carry the pain of those I love, while also trying to live the life I’m used to.
What helped me? I turned my sense of guilt in thankfulness. Grateful that I slept in peace. Grateful that in the morning I hear birds, not bombs.
And that I can be there for Saber and my Iranian friends.
How far can you break type before it stops being type? When does a letter stop being a letter, and start becoming something entirely new?
In the Summer School masterclass by @studio.saber & @britt_moericke , you’ll deconstruct type to understand its core structure. Then, you’ll flip the script: creating your own letterforms from scratch using abstract shapes, unusual tools, and experimental techniques.
How far can you push a letter before it loses its identity? And how do those forms shape the message they carry?
🎓 This masterclass is made for type lovers who aren’t afraid to question, break, and rebuild the rules. Tickets are still available — grab yours now and join us this summer!

⚡Meet the Masters: @studio.saber & @britt_moericke . Two distinct voices — one shared love for type that moves, breaks, and builds.
Studio Saber (IR) explores typography as physical performance. Founder Saber Javanmard bridges East and West by blending Latin, Farsi and Arabic scripts into handmade expressive, dynamic forms. Britt Möricke (NL) is a critic and educator with a lifelong fascination for typography and calligraphy. Since 2004, she has been designing, teaching, and challenging ideas about type and typography in art schools across the Netherlands.
This masterclass, each day will start with a thought-provoking lecture by Britt Möricke, diving into the theory, references and questions that will guide your hands-on experiments. With Studio Saber, you’ll turn those ideas into physical, visual, and wildly original letterforms. This masterclass invites you to rethink the building blocks of visual language. Not just to make letters, but to remake meaning. ✍️
