Promphan Suksumek (@boom.type ) is one of the makers we're supporting in 2025 through our Talent Development Grant Scheme 🔤 What would happen if you designed a Latin script starting from Thai letterforms? Would the result still be legible? This was the central question during Promphan's development year. A type designer, she immersed herself in bi-scriptual design, aiming to develop a new typeface that takes the Thai script as its starting point, rather than – as is usually the case – the Latin 📝 'I am Thai, I design Thai scripts as a job, and I had been wondering for a while: what would happen if I turned the design process back to front? Is it possible to build a typographic bridge between these two script cultures?' Through experimentation and research, Suksumek is working to answer that question. She developed a typeface family and sought guidance from experts in Thailand, India, and Malaysia. 'Following my heart keeps me interested and motivated. I'm trying to involve more emotion in my decisions, instead of rationalising everything' 💭 Discover her work in 'Stimuleringsfonds presents talent' during @dutchdesignweek at @mu_hybrid_art_house and join the opening on 18 October (16:15 CEST). Like many people, I’ve always known about TEDx. But I never imagined that one day I’d be the one on that stage, speaking about the Thai type design scene :) As an outsider looking in, I used to wonder how speakers manage to talk so smoothly within such a tight time limit—until I experienced it myself. Around mid-2024, I was contacted by a group of talented students from Thammasat University. They wanted to interview me as a potential candidate for their TEDx speaker lineup. I was certain it wouldn’t be me. I thought my work—designing letters and archiving type—was too niche to resonate with the public, especially younger designers. But a few months later, I received an email: I had been selected. From there, the process began: refining the script, shaping the message I wanted to share, and making sure it fit within the time limit. Monthly meetings became part of the routine. We went through rounds of feedback and idea-sharing with the curators. Then, a month before the talk, I started practicing daily. I learned how to manage my nerves on stage—repeating the talk until it became muscle memory. I’m deeply thankful to the curator team, especially Punch ( @w.8.j.s ), who was my guide, helper, and practice partner throughout the journey. I’m also grateful to all my friends who came to support me that day—or sent love from afar—my mother, and my biggest supporter: my partner. Joining TEDx and hearing from other speakers across disciplines was something I genuinely appreciated. It was a memorable experience that taught me a lot. I was lucky to meet them and to learn from them live and behind the scene! :) The talk is now available on youtube, you can get link in my bio and if you want to give the project a support, you can submit the photos and follow @thaipographyarchive ! #thaitypedesign #thaipography #thaifont

Neue DIN now speaks Thai, Cyrillic, Greek Back in January, we welcomed Italics and Retalics to Neue DIN. With huge thanks to @rekord.cc 🇺🇦 (with support from @mauvaiston 🇷🇺), @irenevlachou.type Vlachou 🇬🇷, and @boom.type 🇹🇭, we’ve just expanded the typeface to include three brand new alphabets. Neue DIN now supports Cyrillic, Greek, and — for the first time in a DIN typeface — Thai (in the Loopless variant). While this means we can no longer describe the project as ‘100% Made in Berlin,’ it was important to us to have the non-Latin language extensions designed by native-speaking designers. All three alphabets support the whopping 243 static fonts, or for those who prefer a more manageable approach, the single variable font also supports the new languages. With this update, two of our 15 (super)families now speak Thai (Pangea, which we also launched in January, and Neue DIN) and five now speak Cyrillic and Greek (Neue DIN, Pangea, Case, Change, and Ika). We are in the process of collaborating with other non-Latin designers to continue to extend Neue DIN’s capacities, so please do let us know if you are in need of a particular language or alphabet, as we would love to help. As always, the price for our linguistically enhanced fonts remains the same. The new files are available free of charge to all registered users and can be found in your Fontwerk account. For anyone who has previously licensed Neue DIN as a guest, you can ‘upgrade’ your account: Simply click the ‘Create New Account’ link and use the email address you previously used. Your orders placed as a guest will then be linked to the new account. And by the way, thanks to the Regional Pricing, which we introduced at the end of last year, many of the people speaking one of the new languages benefit twice from this update. For example, customers based in Thailand receive Neue DIN at a 61% discount. The idea behind this is to better reflect the realities of life in different regions. #Typography #GreekFonts #CyrillicFonts #ThaiFonts #Loopless #ThaiLoopless #NeueDIN #DIN1451 #DINFonts #TypeFoundry #Fontwerk #NonLatin #Backslanted #Condensed #CyrillicAlphabet #GreekAlphabet #ThaiAlphabet

How do you visualize 30 years of leadership? You build it on Trust. For this rebrand, we engineered a logotype that is intentionally strong and bold to reflect a solid foundation in the packaging industry. To bridge legacy with the future, we integrated a hint of serif—a subtle, sophisticated detail designed to resonate with a new generation while maintaining professional authority. This balance of weight and refined detail, paired with a vibrant gradient system, ensures the identity feels both unshakable and fresh. It is a visual commitment to serving from the heart and fostering sustainable growth with every partner. How do you visualize 30 years of leadership? You build it on Trust. With his Pangea #FontCollection, #ChristophKoeberlin is on a mission to make the world a better place through #typography. Not only does he donate a quarter of his earnings from the fonts to rainforest reforestation projects involving the local population, but he is continuously expanding the range of foreign languages supported by the #fonts. What sounds ambitious is working: thousands of trees have already been planted, and thanks to the active support of international colleagues, Pangea now includes characters for all (!) Latin languages as well as Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, and Hebrew. With the help of Bangkok-born designer @boom.type , the sixth alphabet is now being added: #Thai This writing system has a special feature: there is a #Looped and a #Loopless variant. There is no dogmatic rule as to when which variant should be used. In addition, readers’ preferences vary greatly depending on age and context. Our friends at @typotheque conducted a scientific study on this topic, investigating how loops influence reading – both in terms of #legibility and perception. Based on this research, Boom and Christoph interpreted the results to mean that Loopless is better suited for display sizes, short texts, and expressive applications, while Looped is better for body text and longer reading. They therefore decided to design the more expressive Pangea as Loopless and the more reader-friendly #PangeaText as Looped. The crowning glory of this stringent decision: the #VariableFont switches between these styles via the optical size axis. All registered users can #download the language-expanded fonts free of charge from their #Fontwerk account. For new customers, the price stays the same – with one exception: thanks to the #RegionalPricing introduced a few weeks ago, customers based in #Thailand receive Pangea at a 61% discount. The idea behind this is to better reflect the realities of life in different regions (more on this here). But that’s not all: additional languages are currently being designed, and #Pangea will not be the last #typeface in our portfolio to support Thai.

End of the year, 3rd year of being independent, and it’s going great. I am deeply appreciate all of the people I have been working with, you guys are the best 🫶 Top 3 things I grateful for this year: 1. Funds from @stimuleringsfonds , launched of @thaipography.archive website. It was my first public tools for Thai archiving! There will be thai typography timeline and more to come 👀 It’s still on going development in collaboration with 5lab team. 2. I was always in a dilemma between type design and logotype projects, which led to working 7 days a week. That was rough, both on myself and on my relationships around me. In the last part of this year, I decided to let go of logotype work. It’s sad, but I got my weekends back. I still love drawing lettering and logos, maybe just for smaller projects. It gave me a deep reflection: if I had to choose one — developing fonts or drawing logos — which one would I choose? And fonts are still a hell yes, all the way 🍺 3. All of my clients, collaboration, you name it. I appreciate you all so much. I was so lucky to have a chance to work with such a nice people. 🥺 And these are my top best! What are yours? At first, I have honestly nothing to write. I was thinking of “yeah, 2025 I survived” And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one here. Well, I tried. And you should try it too 🩶 Wishing you all a happy New Year in the Year of the Horse. — Riso print by @dekijm Sticker by @stickerapp #newyearcard

@boom.promphans and I studied together at the @mdesbasel , in Switzerland. Since then, she has been running @boom.type , specialized in Thai-Latin typeface design, wordmarks, and detailed lettering. She contributed to this alphabet with this smiley "U": "I am exploring the idea of layering a pattern into the letter “U.” It fascinates me how layering can introduce a playful element to the otherwise mundane appearance of the letter while preserving its solid form and structure." — Boom Promphan Suksumek is a Thai type designer specializing in both Latin and Thai scripts. She runs her independent practice, Boomtype, and has been working in type design since 2019. After earning her master’s degree from Type and Media in 2022, she has continued to focus on Thai and Latin type design, script extensions, and custom lettering. As an independent designer, she values creative freedom and aims to create well-crafted, functional typefaces. Through her work, she hopes to contribute to the development of Thai and multilingual typography in a thoughtful and meaningful way.
