ECAL A Typographic Atlas
09.04.-09.05.2026
Opening Talk & Type-Design Bar: Do. 09.04.2026
17 Uhr @hgbgallery
🌍 Turin – Circolo del Design | New York – The Cooper Union | Montreal – UQAM | Los Angeles – HMCT Gallery | Paris – Program/me | Lausanne – ECAL | Tokyo – SKWAT Kameari Art Centre 🌎

Neue Letterboard is a typeface designed for letterboards found in cafés, cinemas and storefronts. It was developed with the physical constraints of letterboards in mind. The typeface features pronounced horizontal strokes that replace the pins typically hidden behind the plastic letters. The pin turns into the core feature of the design.
To provide space for the pin, every letter incorporates straight horizontal strokes. Its wide, geometric forms are inspired by typefaces like Eurostile, Microgramma and Earth.
The typeface is currently part of the „ECAL A Typographic Atlas“ exhibition in the HGB gallery @hgbleipzig
Thanks @type_hgb class <3
Interefere Typeface for Rundgang at HGB 2026.
Interfere is a display typeface informed by the visual language of neon signs that emerged from the late nineteen twenties onward. From this moment on, glowing signs defined restaurants, diners, and roadside businesses at night, turning streets into commercial landscapes where advertising often carried more visual weight than architecture itself.
Derived from the construction logic of bent glass tubes, the typeface is monolinear and shaped by smooth curvature. What read as large inktraps are moments of im- plied overlap, referencing the spatial layering created when glass tubes cross in three dimensional space.
Shaped by light after dark, Interfere reflects a moment of modern urban life and translates the logic of luminous signage into typographic form.
Special Thanks to @mariannamalocco@leonardsiegwardt and @nagy.eong.heo for creating our speciment and surely the rest of the @type_hgb class🧡

Mitläufer
This folder is a collection and an interim report on the research and work on a typeface called Mitläufer. It is based on the Schneidler Mediäval typeface, designed by F. H. Schneidler and published by the Bauersche Gießerei in 1936. Some of the metal type can also be found in the HGB lead typesetting workshop. There, it was possible to set the type by hand, print it, scan it in high resolution, and work with this original source.
Schneidler was a type designer, calligrapher, painter and teacher. He joined the NSDAP in 1939 and was classified as a Mitläufer(eng: tag-along) in the denazification process after the war. This category referred to people who were members of the party but only did the minimum required of party members and did not engage beyond that.
What does this mean for the typeface? Should it be used at all? Or does its use reproduce the ideas of the National Socialists? Is a typeface simply a form of the alphabet that conveys information through letters? How visible — and therefore political — are design and background story? What associations does the typeface evoke? In what context can it be used? Does it have to be modified, manipulated, or crossed out? Could it be given a new purpose? Will it be able to forget its past? Or will its origins always be present?
This exploration has not yet led to concrete answers, but it has led to many interesting discussions. That is why this project continues to work on the type and uses this work as a basis for making the topic visible. By expanding and displaying it, the project attempts to give the typeface Mitläufer a new image, to make it its own, to “turn it around,” and to open up space to talk about these questions.

Percheron is a workhorse in the making. This post shows the progress throughout one year. The design process began in the winter semester of 2023/2024 by redrawing shapes of Mediaeval Antiqua – a typeface used by Leipzig based Offizin Haag-Drugulin in the first part of the 20th century. The source’s shapes are deriving indirectly from Caslon and more directly from Old Style by the type foundry Miller & Richard. Percheron tries to bring this style into a more contemporary context.

This publication was created for the HGB Rundgang exhibition 2025. It is showcasing the outcomes of two different type class projects from the winter semester 2024/25.
For project »Past, Present, Future« students drew inspiration from existing typefaces. While investigating the context in which the typeface was created, close attention was paid to its history and use. After specifying the target size, and target medium the class found ways of taking the source material into new, contemporary directions.
Project »Writing Lines« explored the intersection of writing and drawing, creating typefaces that blur the lines between these two worlds. These monolinear typefaces were printed using a pen plotter.

The Benham Type System is a tool to create grid based letters. The project was inspired by a spinning optical illusion made by C. E. Benham in the late 19th century. It was developed in the @type.hgb TypeLab in the winter semester of 2023/24 @hgbleipzig
