📰 OFFLINE 16 📰 In this 16th issue, Offline turns its attention to art direction, which is neither graphic design nor photography, but rather a way of bringing them together harmoniously within a project, often editorial in nature. How can we explain why one layout works better than another? It is difficult to put into words, because the eye must be trained, nourished, and regularly challenged in order to recognize a strong art direction—one that resonates both with its time and with the specific subject it frames and presents. Fashion magazines, but also digital media, advertising campaigns, or web design… the applications are numerous, and no project truly takes shape without a clear art direction. Offline is ECAL’s magazine. Produced by students, it presents the events that shaped a semester—workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions, or trips—through interviews and portfolios. Each issue is structured around a thematic feature, offering an opportunity to examine a topic from multiple perspectives. Led by students in the Bachelor Graphic Design program, the art direction is conceived specifically for each issue, giving the printed edition its distinctive character. Interviews with @hanna.rochereau@omni.gr  , @dixhuitquinze@jean.rene.jean  , @daphnemookherjee  , @lise.de.martino , @diegofellay@julien_gallico__studio ➡️ Available now on ecal-shop.ch ! @ecal_shop  @ecal_graphic_design 📸 @marvmerkel #ECAL #university #magazine #edition #graphicdesign

📖 ECAL A TYPOGRAPHIC ATLAS 📖 A type specimen is a document used by printers and type founders to present their catalogues. Initially produced as single sheets and rarely dated, they evolved into books as the Industrial Revolution, technical advances, and the rise of literacy multiplied typographic styles. Today, type specimens mostly exist in digital form. This is a type specimen. But not only that. It is also an Atlas: a collection of letterforms mapping ten years of typographic creation at ECAL Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design. With students from more than forty countries, ECAL captures cultural connections across the world and within the type design industry. Following the footsteps of early type specimens that juxtaposed Greek, Hebrew, and Latin scripts, the Typographic Atlas presents alphabets, abugidas, abjads, and hanzi/kanji across a rich variety of writing systems, alongside letterforms in use in logos across multiple genres, since type design forms the very foundation of all graphic work. Now available on ECAL shop! 🛒 While the travelling exhibition ECAL A TYPOGRAPHIC ATLAS is going to Paris! 📘 Book launch & exhibition opening 🗓️ Tuesday May 19, 2026, 6:00pm 📍Program/me, Paris @progra.mm.e 🗣️ Talk Typographic Atlas: designing, exhibiting and distributing typefaces 🗓️ Tuesday May 26, 2026, 6:30pm 📍Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris @madparis In collaboration with @gilianecachin & @eurostandard Merci @empire.b.o.o.k.s @ecal_graphic_design @ecal_type_design @ecal_shop Visuals @archhhiv @dorianpngll @theodechanez Sound @liviamschmid #typography #atlas #exhibition #book #graphicdesign

A closer look at Beyond Bézier today. For 40 years, one single technique – Bézier curves – has been the standard for drawing letterforms, resulting in what is described as a lack of variety, all designers using the same digital tools to produce typefaces. The Beyond Bézier research project explores alternatives to refresh the creative process in typography. It is developed along five axes: the mathematics uses a different calculation method to generate curves; the stroke considers the letters based on their skeleton; the surface sees them as a relation between empty and full; the collective questions the individual creative process; and finally, the robot analyses the use of artificial intelligence in the field of type design. The project was developed within an education programme, it fuels ideas and experiences to update the pedagogical aspects of typographic drawing. Image credits: Beyond Bézier #swissdesignawards #swissdesignawards2026

🎬 JOE DANTE AT ECAL 🎬 American cult director of Gremlins, Joe Dante shaped 1980s fantasy cinema with a style blending satire, humor, and cinephile spirit. The ECAL Cinema department was honoured to have welcomed Joe Dante for a Masterclass presented as part of the retrospective dedicated to him by the Cinémathèque suisse @cinemathequesuisse . Many thanks to Joe Dante for this very spontaneous conversation and his continued dedication to the art of cinema. @ecal_cinema #ECAL #masterclass #cinema #JoeDante
