“I wasn’t happy that ‘A Whole New Thing’ didn’t make the right kind of splash. We had worked so hard only to feel like the first step we took might have been a step backwards. But the record’s reception was a matter of perception. Though critics played it cool, musicians warmed up to it immediately. Dave Kapralik told me that whenever he would speak to a singer or player or producer, they would marvel at the album. Jon Hendricks, the jazz singer, loved it. So did Teo Macero, who produced Miles Davis. I liked that because I liked the jazz guys. Even when I was young, I preferred jazz to blues. It could be interesting even if it was boring.” ——From THANK YOU (FALETTINME BE MICE ELF AGIN), by Sly Stone Sly and the Family Stone’s first album, A Whole New Thing, was a massive achievement, tying together all the strands of Sly’s life up until then — his childhood as a gospel singer, his adolescence as a bandleader and session musician, his training as a DJ, his studies in composition. It also might have been too much too soon, and it missed audiences, though it found favor with other musicians. Sly went back into the studio, partly at the urging of his manager Dave Kapralik, and set out to create a hit single. That he did. “Dance to the Music” came out of the box like a rocket. It showcased the band’s prowess, the vocals of not only Sly but his brother Freddie, his sister Rose, Larry Graham, Cynthia Robinson, and more. It was a song about the energy of creating a song, and the album that it anchored was a commercial smash. Sly was thrilled, but also nonplussed: why did audiences leap at his lesser achievements when they had let his genius first album cool its heels in record bins? The sessions for Dance to the Music yielded enough songs for the record and then some. One of the outtakes, “Life of Fortune and Fame,” stayed in the vaults until well into the twenty-first century, at which point it started to appear on various compilations and box sets. You can read all about Dance to the Music and a thousand other things in Sly’s riveting memoir, published by AUWA Books last fall and hailed internationally as one of the best books of 2023 #SummerofSly
