Fourth-generation ice boater Luke Lawrence and crewmate Max Lopez are carrying on a Hudson River winter tradition that dates back centuries. When conditions align with smooth ice and steady wind, vintage ice yachts can reach speeds approaching 100 miles per hour as steel runners glide across frozen rivers. This winter, the pair piloted the ice yacht Ariel to win the Van Nostrand Challenge Cup on New Jersey’s Navesink River, returning the trophy to the Hudson River Yacht Club for the first time in more than a century.

NEVER SINK
The Van Nostrand Cup—one of the oldest challenge races in American sport—can only go off when the Navesink River freezes thick enough to support the 1500lb Class-A, ice yachts and their crews.
Gardner Van Nostrand conceived it as "The Challenge Ice Yacht Cup of America" and commissioned its solid silver trophy from Tiffany & Co. It's only been awarded three times since. Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club took it from the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club in 1891 and has defended it since, winning the only two other successful races in 1978 and 2003.
That all changed this January. We read the Times’ excellent story on this year’s race with thanks that this frigid winter had been good for something, and a bit of wishing we had beaten them to the punch. Come to find out that our friend T.S. Pfeffer has been making a documentary with the Hudson River team for the last six months. He blessed us with a look at his vision of the races' start, maybe the best way to understand what it feels like to tame these dragons of ice.
