One day, Hamama meets a rich and bored businessman (Sami El Adl) who offers him the means to marry Farawla in exchange for curing his misery. A heartbreaking story of the struggles faced by a young couple in a society where love is constantly policed, Atef El Tayeb’s film is a classic of the Egyptian social-realist wave of the 1980s and 90s. As you relax with a Brown Nose cofffee in our cosy, intimate space @totalestudio , uninterrupted selections by Saleh and Hazem will traverse diverse genres and eras, from Latin/Jazz with elements of Samba and Bossa Nova, forays into Japanese reggae, folk, and Afro-Cuban percussion, as well as eclectic Arabic, African-infused electronic music and textured instrumentals. Played on a vintage Hi-Fi sound system, complete with an analog rotary mixer, the cozy living-room atmosphere invites you to sit back and enjoy sound. PRESENTING… Attenberg (2010) by Athina Rachel Tsangari 🎥 ✨ This is the first screening in our INDIE WAVES series, exploring the global cinema movements that challenged cinematic conventions and presented new and visionary approaches to making movies ⚡️ ⚡️ ATTENBERG is among the first GREEK WEIRD WAVE films that emerged alongside Yorgos Lathimos’ DOGTOOTH (which Tsangari co-produced). This particular cinematic wave was a response to Greece’s deep social and economic crisis in the early 2000s, which became acute in 2008. Filmmakers reflected on the response of humans in the face of adversity using dark humor, absurdity and elements of Greek tragedy 🎭 Tsangari’s sophomore film, ATTENBERG, tells the story of Marina, a misanthropic girl caring for her terminally ill father who becomes entangled with a stranger that has just moved into town. Like many Greek Weird Wave films, ATTENBERG is existential, disturbing and features minimal dialogue.
