Portraits of @collective220 and @safena.7 , in Cairo during “Gusra” exchange residency, December 2024 —— Ali and Farah founded Safena 7 around the same time Lena and I established The Laboratory. Both initiatives were the fruit of long conversations we had been having since 2021 - so for over a year - about the state of photography in Egypt. We shared the belief that there was not enough spaces that nurture critical discourses around photography as an art. Ali and Farah have succeeded in taking their project “Safena 7” to the wider SWANA region, collaborating with different entities. Chief among them is Collective 220, who share very similar values and views about photography in Algeria and in the region as a whole. When I heard they will be visiting Cairo as part of the “Gusra: Between Two Waves we Sail” exchange residency program they are collaborating in, I reached out to Ali to shoot portraits documenting what I believe to be of freshest and most interesting initiatives in Egypt alongside one of my favorite photography collectives in the Middle East & North Africa. علي وفرح أسسوا “سفينة 7” في نفس الوقت اللي أنا ولينا أسسنا فيه “The Labratory”. المبادرتين دول كانوا نتيجة لدرداشات طويلة كنا بنتكلم فيها من سنة 2021 - يعني لأكتر من سنة - عن حالة التصوير الفوتوغرافي في مصر. كنا متفقين إن مفيش أماكن كفاية بتدعم النقاشات النقدية حوالين التصوير الفوتوغرافي كفن. علي و فرح قدروا يبحروا بمشروعهم “سفينة 7” بشكل أوسع في المنطقة واشتغلوا مع كيانات مختلفة. وأهمهم “كولكتيف 220”، اللي عندهم نفس القيم والأفكار عن التصوير الفوتوغرافي في الجزائر وفي المنطقة بشكل عام. لما سمعت إنهم هيزوروا القاهرة كجزء من برنامج الإقامة “ڤُصرة: بين موجتين نبحر” اللي بيتعاونوا فيه مع سفينة ٧، تواصلت مع علي علشان أصور بورتريهات توثق اللي أعتقد إنه من أحدث وأهم المبادرات في مصر جنبًا إلى جنب مع واحد من مجموعات التصوير المفضلة عندي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. 💛 Thanks to my partners @lenanaassana @alya_sorour @simaajlyakin Shot on a mix of large format and medium format.
