on a cold February day I had a patient outside eye 👁️ witnessing my slow and not perfect practice.
It was one of the studio days, when you have no agenda or plan and the first signs of not-too-distant spring sun is filling you with gratitude. Less and less often I experience artistic days, that don’t need to result in anything, the world just spins too fast to quiet the mind, you also feel it, right?
So I thought of sharing this beautiful state with you, let us all have more slow creative times.

What Do Fathers Leave Behind? - Sadiq Yahia Al-Harasi | VAiF25 - Portofolio Open Call Exhibition
[EN Following in GR]
One of the seven portfolios selected in this year’s VAiF25 Open Call Portfolios is by Sadiq Yahia Al-Harasi (YEM), titled “What Do Fathers Leave Behind?”
This project is a deeply personal journey through memory, loss, and the search for paternal connection. Through his mother’s stories, the traces of his father’s village, and his own reflections, Al-Harasi reconstructs a portrait of absence — finding fragments of identity and belonging along the way. His mother becomes the guardian of their shared past, bridging lives and generations, while photography becomes a means of healing and remembrance, transforming longing into quiet understanding.
The exhibition was presented at the Former Municipal Slaughterhouses of Thessaloniki – Labattoir, as part of VAiF25, from 29.11.2025 to 21.12.2025.

Ένα από τα επτά portfolios που επιλέχθηκαν στο φετινό Open Call Portfolios του VAiF25 είναι του Sadiq Yahia Al-Harasi (YEM) με τον τίτλο “What Do Fathers Leave Behind?”

⚡️ We are glad to feature the work of another mentee of our 2025 mentorship programme. The Yemen-based visual artist Sadiq Al-Harasi addresses questions of identiy and family. His project “What Do Fathers Leave Behind?” was mentored by Danaé Panchaud.
•
I’ve spent my life searching for my father, trying to piece together the fragments he left behind. I’ve longed to hear his stories—his adventures, sacrifices, and countless journeys. His absence compelled me to delve into the remaining physical archives of our family. But I wonder: does the past exist as we remember it? How far does memory stretch across the distance created by time? My ongoing project, “What Do Fathers Leave Behind?” is an auto-ethnographic exploration of the absence. It materialises the loss of a father, identity, and the past and future selves of both my father and me. Through this project, I explore the intricate relationship between identity, loss, belonging, and memory, utilising family archives, photography, writing, and sound."
•
Our mentorship programme, based on a 1:1 mentorship through which an artist supports another artist in the development of an ongoing project, will be renewed in 2026. Keep posted.⚡️

Introducing Sadiq al-Harasi ✨
Sadiq al-Harasi is a visual artist and cultural practitioner from Yemen and based in Amman, whose work explores iconographies of displacement. His pictures of roads, borders, walls and windows emphasize silent structures that codify social movement. His art grapples with missing subjects and shifting symbols, cutting away and layering figures and landscapes. Multimedia experiments meld digital and cyanotype photography with collage, embroidery, and archives; rewiring loss and liberation through threads and horizon lines. Al-Harasi has exhibited locally, virtually, and internationally at the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Bozar; SOMA Art in Berlin; Zara Centre in Amman; and the M7 museum in Doha. He is also a Prince Claus Fellow and awardee of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture and Magnum Foundation.

In "What Fathers Leave Behind", @sadiqyhash pieces together the presence of a man he never fully knew: his father.
Through family archives, cyanotypes, and landscapes filled with longing, Sadiq turns mourning into pictures. Absence isn’t empty here, it’s full of questions, echoes, and pieces of a life that ended too soon.

My mother has always been my primary source of numerous things. She was my first love, the first song I ever heard was sung by her voice, and the first storyteller I’ve ever encountered.
Despite being an uneducated villager, she taught me how to interact with people around me, how to love the land, homeland, family, and the concept of dignity. She was the one who imparted so many valuable lessons about life. She taught me how to laugh, how to preserve memories, and how to transform grief into a song.
Every time I take a photograph of my mother, I don’t feel compelled to capture a specific moment with her, but rather I strive to prevent her from leaving, to protect her from the death that would take her away from me.
