Just One Oak: What a Single Tree Can Be Explore an oak tree, from its leafy crown to its roots underground, and learn all the amazing ways it supports the animals, plants, and habitat where it lives in this surprising and enlightening nonfiction picture book companion to the award-winning Fungi Grow. An oak tree is so much more than meets the eye. From tiny fungi to mighty mammals, this amazing tree contains a whole world. For insects and birds, the oak’s leaves, branches, and bark are a home. For bears and squirrels, the thousands of acorns the oak produces are a nutritious superfood. Owls, deer, foxes, and many more creatures are drawn to the rich and healthy environment an oak creates. Because of a single oak tree, its many neighbors flourish. #books #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #picturebook #trees

From the author and illustrator of FUNGI GROW comes a new nonfiction picture book for kids called JUST ONE OAK. It’s a comprehensive look at the important role an oak tree plays in its ecosystem. With a mix of alliteration, occasional rhymes and the repeated refrain “just one oak” it’s a great read aloud. Additional factual captions and labels give kids lots more interesting information. And I adore the gorgeous illustrations. #outdoorsykidlit #nonfictionforkids #naturebooksforkids

In addition to celebrating our planet Earth earlier this week, today is the day to give a special shoutout to the wonder of those incredible ecosystems, those beautiful bounties, and those producers of oxygen: trees! In addition to planting a tree or nurturing a sapling, Arbor Day is also a great day for diving into books that celebrate trees through education, poetry, folklore, and fiction! Featuring: 🌲 WISDOM OF THE WOODS by Rachel Piercey, illus. by Freya Hartas 🍁 JUST ONE OAK by Maria Gianferrari, illus. by Diana Sudyka 🌱 MORE THAN A TREE by Sarah Kurpiel 🌲 WOODLORE by Kevin Parr and Anja Sušanj Big thanks to Magic Cat Publishing, ABRAMS Kids, Beach Lane Books, SimonKIDS, Rocky Pond Books, and Penguin Young Readers for copies of these books! #childrensbooks #arborday #recommendations

JUST ONE OAK: WHAT A SINGLE TREE CAN BE Written by Maria Gianferrari @maria_gianferrari_author Illustrated by Diana Sudyka @tinyaviary Ages 4 – 8+ “Just one oak . . . from the tip of its crown down to the ground, with roots all around, sustains so very many creatures, from the teeny-tiny to the big and mighty.” So begins Maria Gianferrari’s fascinating exploration of all the ways oak trees contribute to the ecosystem where they live. From their distinctive leaves to their shaggy bark to their incredible acorns, oak trees are self-protecting while providing shelter and food for an amazing array of wildlife. Maria Gianferrari takes readers outdoors to get a close-up view of one oak tree, and by extension an enlightened understanding of the reach of this keystone species. Her lyrical introductions to each concept, capped with a repeated “Just one oak . . .” that reinforces the contributions of these trees—lead to paragraphs of factual information. Each of these are packed with specific information about the types of wildlife sustained by a single tree and the benefits they enjoy. The numbers here are simply astounding and could inspire many cross-curricular lessons in math, science, language arts, art, and more. Diana Sudyka’s nature illustrations are beautiful, exciting, and full of the types of small, impactful details readers love and that expand their understanding of the text (especially for visual learners). Animals scamper, birds feast, and an entire community of creepy-crawlies scurry through leaf litter and below in Sudyka’s action-filled pages. Each spread will have children lingering to discover all the wonders of an oak tree. A glorious celebration of the oak tree and the species that rely on it, JUST ONE OAK will spark curiosity and an appreciation for the interconnections among wildlife. The book will delight any nature lover and is a must for school and public libraries. Beach Lane Books @simonkids 2026 ISBN 978-1665961042 For full review and an Arbor Day Craft, click link in bio. Thanks to Beach Lane Books for sending me this book! #picturebook #nonfiction #childrensnonfiction #classroombooks #sciencebooks

LITTLE LAND by @tinyaviary (2023, @littlebrownyoungreaders ) is a favorite in our house all year long (note the well-loved dust jacket 🙃). The gorgeous illustrations and text work together to share the wonder and resiliency of our planet. I love how Diana Sudyka is able to gently inspire readers into action to care for our land in such a hopeful, collaborative way. I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ll say that I marvel at the spreads that move the art upside down as there is “a tip, tip, tipping out of balance” and then at the restoration “even when things seem unstoppable, unrecognizable, and beyond repair…” how “life and land can find a way…” I’m not the most posty socia media participant, but I’d be remiss not to share this beauty on Earth Day. 🌎 🌍 🌏 Happy Earth Day!! #earthdaybooksforkids #momwriter #childrensauthor #childrensbookstagram #picturebooklove
