We are so excited to present STATE OF THE ART. This series explores innovative chamber music from living composers, and places emphasis on new work created right here in Boise, Idaho. Orbiting the topic of “People & Place,” this program explores an intersection of collective and personal identity and the places we call home through the lens of the string quartet. As the recipient of our first ever string quartet commission project, we are proud to present the *world premiere* of a new work by local composer Jesse Salinas. In collaboration with @boisestatemusic , student composers were asked to respond to the concept of “People & Place” as it pertains to life in Boise. The result is a brand new 20-minute original composition that explores the literal and metaphorical presence of one of Boise’s most emblematic spaces: the Boise Depot. And! Just in time for the Depot’s 100th anniversary! Additionally, Daniel Bernard Roumain (@danielroumain ) boldly dedicates his fifth string quartet “to the memory of Rosa Parks and courageous women everywhere” while Gemma Peacocke (@gemma_peacocke ) contemplates the erasure of women from public consciousness. Shelley Washington (@shelleyplaysaxy ) pays homage to her home and refuge in the American Heartland while Kevin Puts (@composerkevinputs ) considers those seeking home and refuge from crisis. Friday 5/02, 7:30PM - @thesocial.boise (21+) Sunday 5/04, 2:00PM - @mingstudios thirdspacequartet.com for details and tickets 🎟️ State of the Art is generously supported by @artsidaho and @boiseartsandhistory . #livingcomposers #innovative #stringquartet #worldpremiere #contemporaryart #boise #idaho #idahohistory #strings #stringquartet

Sometimes, when the stars align, and the creative opportunity gods look down on us and smile, we get to make creative content to support the very people that inspire us with their own creativity. This was one of those times! What a joy it was to spend time in the studio with this amazing group — Thirdspace Quartet. Big props to them for the incredible skill they brought to the studio. We were gifted with goose-bump-inducing performances. Big props to @iamryancoark for live-tracking and recording this group like an absolute boss. Give this talented quartet a follow and let us know in the comments if you’ve seen them perform!

GEMMA PEACOCKE (@gemma_peacocke ) is a composer from Aotearoa New Zealand whose work spans a wide range of genres, including chamber music, orchestral works, and multimedia collaborations. State of the Art explores imaginative and innovative work by contemporary composers. Featuring: Composers Shelley Washington & Kevin Puts! SHELLEY WASHINGTON (@shelleyplaysaxy ) writes music to fulfill one calling- to move. With an eclectic palette, Washington tells stories focusing on exploring emotions and intentions by finding their root cause. Using driving, rhythmic riffs paired with indelible melodies, she creates a sound dialogue for the public and personal discourse. Shelley performs regularly as a vocalist and saxophonist, primarily on baritone saxophone, and has performed and recorded throughout the Midwest and East Coast- anything from Baroque to Screamo. MIDDLEGROUND (2015) “the space grounded, the between, the center. The Heartland. The prairie, the grasslands, Konza, Flint Hills, Manhattan, Emporia, Salina. Where we gathered. Home of the heart, heart of the home. The middle ground: my refuge born from the land living in my heart. Where my home is, living and breathing outside of my body, thousands of miles apart. This hallowed ground.” ——— KEVIN PUTS (@composerkevinputs ) As the winner of numerous prestigious awards, including the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for his debut opera Silent Night, Kevin Puts’ works have been commissioned, performed, and recorded by leading ensembles, and soloists throughout the world, including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Jeffrey Kahane, Dame Evelyn Glennie, the New York Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Orchester (Zurich), the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Miro Quartet, and the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, Atlanta, Colorado, Houston, Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Minnesota. Kevin is currently a member of the composition department at the Peabody Institute and the Director of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer’s Institute. HOME (2019) “The refugee crisis in Europe, documented in recent media by horrific stories and photos of displaced families, led me to compose Home.“ #livingcomposers #boise #stringquartet #liveconcert #contemporary #newmusic #strings

Meet composer Jesse Salinas, the recipient of our first commission project! We’re premiering his composition May 2 & 4 as part of our State of the Art program. We collaborated with @boisestatemusic composition department to commission, workshop, perform, and record a brand new string quartet from an emerging composer. The result is a brand new 20-minute original composition exploring the literal and metaphorical presence of one of Boise’s most emblematic spaces: the Boise Depot. And! Just in time for the Depot’s 100th anniversary! Tune in this week to BSPR’s @boisephil showcase to catch a conversation with Bradley Berg (@breadberg ), Jesse, and all 4 of us, plus a sneak peak performance. Wednesday, April 16th @ 2pm Sunday, April 20 @ 12pm Monday, April 21 @ 9am Commission and State of the Art are generously supported by @boiseartsandhistory and @artsidaho . Thank you! About Jesse: Jesse Salinas is a Boise composer born and raised here in the city of trees. His compositions have explored a broad variety of genres, including film scoring, big band jazz, digital production, and double bass quartets about Winnie the Pooh. Jesse’s music style is greatly influenced by his language studies, cultural appreciation, and Mexican-Canadian-American heritage. This has inspired him to incorporate rhythms, melodies, and motifs from around the world into his music. Jesse strives to make his music easily approachable by all types of listeners 一 from trained conservatory musicians to those who have never heard classical music. Jesse’s style carries a pop-influenced energy with lots of charming 19th-century harmony. Jesse’s overall inspiration for composing is to show the power that instrumental music has in our lives. He believes that wordless music has the ability to transcend the restrictions of language and directly target human emotions. From this, people can relate to and be moved by the music in an even more powerful way. Beyond composing, Jesse also loves to spend time exploring, volunteering with kids, reading historical fiction, going on hikes, or playing the double bass. #commission #commissionart #newmusic #contemporary #boise #idaho #thisisboise
