What an inspiring weekend at the El Sistema USA National Symposium ✨🎻 We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve as the symposium’s keynote ensemble at the beautiful Jones Hall and connect with so many incredible musicians, educators, students, and supporters. It was especially meaningful to reconnect with composer and keynote speaker Daniel Bernard Roumain (@danielroumain ) (DBR), whose work And Still We Crossed premiered earlier this season during our EMPOWER concert alongside The Evergreen Quartet (@evergreen.quartett ) through the HSPVA/AFA Chamber Music Partnership. We were also honored to spend time with composers Efraín Amaya (@efrainamaya ) and Houston composer Arthur Gottschalk. During the symposium, Apollo performed two movements from Gottschalk’s Imágenes de Cuba, which will be performed in full during our season finale, VENTURE 🚀✨ The celebration continued at the beautiful reception at Lynn Wyatt Square for the Performing Arts. Co-commissioned by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, this new work features Tracy on six-string electric violin and includes a deeply moving “Town Hall Cadenza,” where eight community members share reflections on community as Tracy responds musically in real time. A Juilliard-trained violinist known for expanding the voice and possibilities of the violin, Tracy has inspired celebrated composers to write specifically for him and has performed on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert, at Carnegie Hall, with the LA Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, and many more, and is the author of The Strum Bowing Method: How to Groove on Strings. In his personal studio, Tracy Silverman (@tracysilverman ) shapes the sound world of America to US, working with a mock-up of the orchestra track as he prepares for the West Virginia premiere of this powerful work by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) (@danielroumain ). The score calls for 22 changes of effects on the electric violin, each one carefully refined, adjusted, and brought into balance. “Getting these sounds right is a matter of tweaking and retweaking and adjusting.” For Tracy, every detail serves the music. Even distortion is shaped with intention, clarity, and beauty.
