Thanks to the fine folk at @ncnean for hosting a marvellous Monday lunchtime tasting of the latest release from their experimental Huntress series: Malted Teacake. Held at the @comptoir_bakery in Maltby Street, it was accompanied by lots of tasty pastries, some @isle_of_mull -cheese, Chimay trappist beer and, best of all, lots of yeast chat   Love a bit of yeast chat. "Malted Teacake", you see, is made with two of Nc’nean’s house yeast strains, along with a third strain commonly used in Belgian-style dubbel ales. It's then matured in a mix of STR red wine, Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. It's only three years old but belies its youth with loads of remarkable rich flavours - buttered crumpets, marmalade and some spiciness. Not many Scottish whisky distilleries talk about the importance of yeast but it's actually very interesting. If you’re not interested in yeast then you should be because yeast is a very interesting ingredient and the very fact that most people don’t know that is extremely interesting is interesting in itself and what we find intersting is.....hey....come back here, we’re not finished interesting you.

On this day in 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their "Bed-in for Peace’ in Amsterdam. When we were little, we did several memorable protests in our beds. Thankfully, none of them were as widely reported in the press as that staged by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969. Days after getting married, and instead of doing an all-inclusive in Dubai, the superstar couple turned their ‘honeymoon’ into a sedentary stand against the Vietnam War. This involved lying in a bed at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam, talking about peace, singing, playing guitar, ordering room service and, given Ono’s vegan diet, probably enduring a Dutch oven or two. It was brilliant to hang out with Ben, meet the trees on his farm, look through his incredible books, and get leaned on by Pesto the Great Dane, all while learning more about how he's using trees to make tasty beverages.
