Bringing more Good News:
Matt Berninger, lead singer and lyricist for beloved Brooklyn rock band The National, talks about Willie’s 1978 cover of “All of Me.” It was the third single off Matt’s dad’s favorite Willie record, Stardust, an album Matt loves so much that when he went to record his first solo album, Serpentine Prison, he enlisted Stardust producer Booker T. Jones to produce, and Willie’s harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, to play harp.
We’ll dig into all that, plus how beautifully Willie sings, how poorly Matt’s dad whistles, and the healing power of music, with cameos by Roberta Flack, Billie Holiday, and Lester Young--and a full-on co-starring role for Mickey, who sat in on the interview and provided his own detailed memories of creating Stardust.

Bid to own one of Matt Berninger’s handwritten lyric baseballs in support of emerging musicians. ⚾️🎸
A few years ago, Matt began drafting lyrics on baseballs after notebooks started to feel tied to pressure and expectation. The shift reshaped his process, and baseballs became the first place his words land before moving to a laptop.
For the 2026 Sonic Guild Auction, the winning bidder chooses the song, and Matt will handwrite the lyrics on a baseball created just for you.
This piece is part of a larger auction featuring signed guitars from Dave Matthews, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, handwritten lyrics from Matthew Caws of Nada Surf and Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver, rare posters, photography, and one-of-a-kind experiences.
All proceeds go directly to Sonic Guild’s grant fund, supporting independent musicians at pivotal early stages of their careers.
