This was a rare experience for me when an idea, found floating there in the ether, is almost fully formed in your mind, before the camera even rolls.
Deep gratitude to @voiceswithimpactfest commissioning this short documentary - they are such a conduit for conceptual artistic expression. They want to challenge, to educate to push audiences and boundaries. They commission work that makes you think, laugh, cry but ultimately changes how you see the world - THIS is what it’s all about.
@danpembrokepgb learned at a young age that he had Retinitis Pigmentosa a rare genetic condition that slowly narrows his field of vision. With only 10% of his vision left Dan achieves something he could only ever dream of. It’s about resilience, strength and the courage to focus and keep throwing.
Focus Throw also refers to the distance a lens travels between focus points, far away to infinity to whats millimetres in front of you, whats sharp, whats blurred. It offers the notion that our future as well as our past are often obscured in unusual and unexpected ways. I wanted to communicate with mixed metaphor how the javelin as an object helped plant the seed for this future, captivated by the idea of the javelin in flight, of the arc it takes, reflecting our own stories - we never quite know where the javelin will land.
We had the great honour of attending, with Dan, the premier of this years VWI Festival in Vancouver with 9 other commissioned shorts each stunningly presented in various forms, styles and approaches. So staggering was the breadth of work. Memorable and deeply affecting.

Our first trip to Georgia was in Spring 2018.
It felt like we discovered a hidden gem: people, country, nature, music and delicious food on every corner! It was love from first sight! Since then we took 2 small groups every year and shared our discoveries with our customers. We had amazing experiences, lived in villages, cooked with locals, brewed moonshine, swam in mountain rivers and had a go at singing with family of polyphonic singers! Diego’s work is like being at the event horizon of reality, if that place was in a cosmic future nightclub jungle. Its gravity pulls you in like kaleidoscopic full colour black hole. It’s easy to get lost there, in wonder, in awe, its funny its sad, its all the things.
We listened to punk and jazz as we filmed. We talked, walked, we got in the flow making it all up as we went. He’s makes art for himself but when you see it you know it’s for you.

Are All Barefoot Shoes Truly Barefoot, and Are They All Sustainable?
My passion for barefoot shoes runs deep, as wearing them evokes a sense of freedom, connection, and even an ancestral feeling. At Gaucho Ninja, I craft barefoot shoes that embody and transmit this unique experience. In 2024, we’re witnessing an exciting surge of new brands and diverse barefoot shoe options. As our collective focus sharpens on achieving a more natural feel in footwear, the market is responding. Even traditional shoe brands are introducing more flexible and anatomically designed options, signaling a shift in consciousness, a change in aesthetics, and a growing desire to reconnect with the natural world.
A barefoot shoe is not merely a type of footwear, but a concept rooted in the natural experience of being barefoot. When our feet are unshod, they enjoy unrestricted freedom—allowing for complete expansion, contraction, flexibility, and movement, much like our hands. From these sensations, we derive key principles essential to barefoot shoes:
Flexibility: Ensuring natural movement.
Toe Shape: A wide toe box that accommodates the asymmetrical shape of the human foot.
Flat 0-Drop Sole: Promoting a more natural foot position.
In addition, barefoot shoes should mirror how our natural feet function, taking into consideration that they are composed of skin, muscles, bones, blood, nerves, and responsive to sensations such as temperature and texture. Therefore, they should be breathable, crafted from natural materials, and offer a protective layer to safeguard the feet.
Unfortunately, not all barefoot shoe brands uphold these principles. Some follow outdated aesthetics, producing designs with wide, pointy toe caps and faux zero-drop heels, holding onto the traditional notion that shoes must be pointy and elevated to be considered 'proper.' These compromises can detract from the health benefits of genuine barefoot shoes, which should primarily enhance well-being and comfort.
