The 119 Studio

Inspired by the nations gravitational pull to lakes, lochs, ponds, lidos and beaches during both Covid-19 lockdowns, ‘Dive In’ metaphorically mirrors the experience of quenching your soul through swimming, with the rejuvenating, restorative properties of the UK’s favourite ramen 🍜 These experiences are brought together by @greenteapeng , who we enlisted to cover perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Feeling Good by Nina Simone. Generating work we love, with people we rate, for brands we admire has been our mission from day one. This one is a highlight among many great memories to date with @wagamama_uk . Baek Seung-am’s life took a swivel when he swapped out his property career to run his late aunties neighbourhood fried chicken restaurant, Chicken Salon. Decked out with a modest kitchen, 6 table interior and humble home-strung decorations, the bells and whistles of this Korean establishment come from the dry rubbed crispy chicken and cold bottles of beer. Wanting each episode in the series to feel distinct, this one was all about stillness. We barely moved the camera once it was rolling. Tom took up quiet corners around the restaurant while the rest of us camped out in the kitchen (a familiar setup on our Asia tour.) Thankfully, wireless video and radios meant we could monitor everything from behind the fryer, beers in one hand, fried chicken in the other. Every so often a dream project like this comes around.. and the plan for this one was clear: 3 cities, 11 stories, 170 recipes. The result? wagamama’s latest cookbook, soul kitchen. It all started with finding incredible locals based in Tokyo, Seoul and Ho Chi Minh. They didn’t just guide us, they became friends, unlocking experiences we’ll never forget. As for our team, that part was easy. We brought together people who love food as much as we do - people agile enough to adapt to any kitchen, from tight backstreets to open flames, continually shaping our approach to honour the people we were championing. First up, Tokyo. Bourdain called it ‘a densely packed, impenetrable layer cake of the strange and wonderful that thrills.’ He wasn’t wrong. Bright lights, sharp style, and a smorgasbord of the best food you’ll ever eat made it our most inspiring pitstop. Our next stop was snowy Seoul, where we indulged in multiple rounds of the best fried chicken we’ve ever had. We got schooled by OFTT on the importance of bunsik and even met a real-life kimchi master. We ended the trip trading winter for the warmth of Ho Chi Minh City, landing right in the heart of Lunar New Year where the city’s energy was high from touchdown. Producing something physical in the form of this cookbook has been one of our most rewarding outputs to date.
