Being an artist is always weird, but right now I find it especially so. I feel responsibility to reflect on:
the violence, corruption, and greed of all the mad kings we have made
the desperation and anger of the innocents
the stubborn kindness and humor in people everywhere
all the hurt, generally
etc.
But I’m unable to process all that on the schedule of the news cycle. I’m paralyzed by every occurrence of gun violence in the US. I’m ashamed of the things our leaders expose about our values. I’m nervous and optimistic for the elections in Hungary. I feel fear and tenderness for everyone who has been touched by the war in the Middle East, including the diaspora who, at the sound of the first attack all in unison said, “I want to go back.”
I especially hold the people of Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine, many of whom face a short list of bad options.
I’m stretching my capacity for empathy via pain (is there another way?). Mine is a head-scratching-brow-furrowing state, my fingers a loose weave over my lips or a C-clamp on my ribs.
It seems strange to make warm invitations when you feel cold and freaked out all the time, but I also know that nothing makes me feel better than music. Being in it, letting it move my body, watching my colleagues in awe of their goodness. I cling to every time I get to play. It’s an outlandish privilege. It’s the closest I can get to describing the divine.
After my month of semi-hermitage in Brooklyn, I’m ready to be back with you. So, in my head-scratching-rib-clutching-tongue-rolling way, I invite you to these upcoming concerts in Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Cologne, and NYC. I’m especially eager to share my flute-voice duo Pierrot Twins with @flutephobia and projections by @nick.tauro

This week, we kicked off a new podcast on HowlRound! In this mini-series, co-directors Tara Khozein (US/HU) and Martin Boross (HU/US) travel to New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Maine, to lead devised multidisciplinary projects with local artists. The projects aimed to test the post-dramatic creation methods and guidelines developed over the last decade at Hungarian contemporary theater collective STEREO AKT, where Martin served as the founding artistic director.
In episode one, Tara and Martin sit down with Hope Orange and Diana Delgado at q-Staff theatre in Albuquerque right after their residency and public showing of Dwelling, an immersive theatre event on the theme of home.
