NILIM - Uncoiling CS !!!Out now!!! Nílim (please note the accent on the first I which extends the vowel to make the word sound like "nee-lim") means "I am not" in the Irish language, but I'll tell you what Nílim actually is and that is one John Quill. John lives in Limerick on the west coast of Ireland and has done a number of bands in the past, most notably the post-metal outfit Third Island. Nílim sees John go solo, armed with guitar, drum machine and vocals. It is intently slow and punishing, designed for a single purpose of weight and repetition. Using a stripped back and simplistic approach, Nílim performs a form of industrial sludge, with doom, post-metal, and shoegaze elements. Godflesh is a good musical touchstone. This tape compiles the two recordings Nílim have done so far ("Uncoiling" and a demo) and includes a bonus track not seen before that brings it up to almost an hour of material. Aside from paying to get the tapes made (I just about managed to do that bit), John did absolutely everything on this thing from the music to the art, even to the sweet looking photos I'm using of the tape itself. Nílim even has a neocities site like me! It was a pleasure working with him. Links in bio etc. @nilim.noise #nilim #nilimnoise #industrialmetal #sludgemetal #noiserock #metaltapes

MARROWBONE - s/t tape out this week! Tapes Of Wrath TOW011 Marrowbone is a 3 piece heavy experimental post punk band from Dublin. Music does weird shit at the intersection of dark, metal-tinged bass lines, jumpy basement rock, and caterwauling vocals. A clattering seance in the weirdo woods for anyone with wounds to lick, heads to bang, arses to shake, or fascist systems to give their two fingers to. I did the Marrowbone tape because they sent a flattering email (take note potential demo senders) that revealed they actually knew the label, and then I listened to the stuff and it just grabbed me from the off. Weird and noisy with tons of post punk goodness. Check it out. There's a launch gig on Friday! Couple of things for today.... (1) HUBERT SELBY JUNIOR INFANTS - This Damned Mess EP We recorded a couple of songs DIY style as a benefit for families in Palestine. Please check it out on bandcamp and donate if you can. Lots of friends helped out - Ash sang on a song, Róisín did the amazing art and Colin helped track the drums. /album/this-damned-mess (2) JOTNARR - Rotten Fucking Planet tape repressed! We made a bunch more of the Jotnarr tape which are basically exactly the same as the first press. 5 tracks in about 17 mins of some sweetly hefty yet melodic black-metal-infused d-beat shit from England's oldest city on a translucent pink tape adorned with stunning art by Wes Brown. superfirecords.bandcamp.com/album/rotten-fucking-planet Thanks! @hubyinfants @jotnarr

DRIDGE Dying Out 2xLP (World Gone Mad) Philly trio Dridge’s last album “Curing” was a wicked and unusual blend of gothic rock, post-punk and grooving sludge metal. It was one of those records that is hard to get your head around originally, but it worms its way in for sure. I reckon give it a few years and people will be crawling out of the woodwork to praise it. On “Dying Out”, Dridge have done a relative volte-face and gone back to their roots as a full-on nasty doom unit. It’s slow and low, with a nasty edge that makes me think of an even more drugged Dystopia or Winter. Things may seem simpler but they’re still an unusual and exceptional band. With three songs in 45 minutes (plus an intro and outro) it is Someone else said that this is “Amebix meets Electric Wizard” so I will use that too! /album/dying-out #dridge #worldgonemadrecords #doommetal #sludgemetal #phillymetal

LACING Never LP (Handstand) “Never” is sadly the final release by Lacing from Tennessee, but it’s a fine note to go out on. They had been doing that 90’s-inspired shoegaze thing, taking cues from Swervedriver, Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine et al, but adding some heaviness and some real swirling fugue states. They always did a much better job than some of the usual chancers on bigger labels that’s for sure. As with the other Lacing releases, the artwork and vinyl look lovely (clear with pink wisps inside) and match aesthetically. R.I.P. Lacing! Incidentally, the only other band I can think of from Tennessee is His Hero Is Gone. @lacingband @handstandrecords #lacing #lacingband #handstandrecords #shoegaze #grunge #nugaze #grungegaze

STEVE HARTLETT At The Theatres CS (Redscroll) Steve plays in the exemplary Ovlov, a fuzzy, pretty heavy slacker-rock band with tons of joyful hooks, where the vibe is seemingly bright and sunny but actually is underscored with melancholy, to my ears anyway. Ovlov might actually be way more popular than I think so you may already know this. Another marker of popularity is that I’d have their stuff in the distro if it wasn’t impossible to get a response from their label and distributor. Anyway Steve’s solo stuff continues the effortlessly hook-laden breeziness but in a more stripped-down manner as befits the more lo-fi, DIY process. The smartness and bite is still there though. Guy’s a genius! I’m going to cite Tony Molina as a comparison because they both love a tune, come from a band-based background and the artwork is black and white. This tape collects together “Solitude For Dummies” and “Molting” which are a couple of recordings from 2020. /album/molting @ovlovgram @redscroll #stevehartlett #ovlovband #redscroll #redscrollrecords #indierock #slackerrock
