Our Wallpaper* Architect of the Year 2026 goes to Je Ahn of
@studioweave , and when asked about a building that made him smile, he reflects on a place rooted in comfort, craft and human-centred design.
For Ahn, the building that holds a special place in his imagination is Can Lis in Mallorca, designed in 1971 by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. Ahn stayed there during an artist residency in 2014 and was struck by its relaxed, organic nature. Built after Utzon’s departure from the Sydney Opera House, Can Lis is crafted from traditional local materials and shaped by everyday rituals: its layout responds to the landscape near Portopetro, its walls are simple and hand-made, and its details reflect Utzon’s life and habits.
Unlike highly controlled structures, Ahn admires how Utzon worked with his builder, making decisions on site and allowing the building to emerge alongside its construction. The result feels made rather than designed, with a sense of ease and joy that comes from trust and familiarity with place. The house’s simplicity and informality, do not detract from its comfort; instead, they make it deeply human and welcoming, qualities that resonated with Ahn long after his stay.
In his own work, Ahn carries forward this belief in flexibility, comfort and emotional resonance, valuing architecture that is adaptable, tied to context and capable of bringing a smile to those who inhabit it. Can Lis, with its serene presence and handcrafted sensibility, remains for him a joyful reminder of how architecture can be anchored in life as much as in design.
