THE ELWICK EDIT · ABSTRACT RUGS, PART III Another scheme from the abstract rug edit I shared previously, this time built around Christopher Farr Editions’ Plate 184 rug. This one has turned into a bit of a favourite. I’ve been increasingly drawn to rust tones used alongside cooler blues, chalky neutrals and darker wood. They add warmth without the room feeling too heavy, while the blues keep the palette fresh. The rug brings structure, colour and movement, so I wanted the rest of the scheme to feel collected rather than overly styled. The patterns sit in the same broad colour world, but shift in scale, texture and mood. Full sourcing on slide two. #christopherfarr #abstractrug #patternplay #colourfulinteriors #interiorsourcing

Something blue. A small edit of blue table lamps I’ve been saving, from inky ceramic bases to softer, powdery shades that work so well with patterned rooms. Blue against warmer tones is a combination I keep coming back to lately. 1. @alfrednewall 2. @cressidabell 3. @beauvamp 4. @leporcellanefirenze1948 5. @birdiefortescue 6. @by.alvaro.picardo x @studio_atkinson 7. @andobjects 8. @oka 9. @bunnywilliamshome #tablelamp #blueinteriors #decorativelighting #interiorsourcing #interiorinspiration

The case for rust red. Not bright red, not burgundy exactly, but that earthy red / red ochre / terracotta place in between. It is a colour that I treat almost like a neutral, but with the added benefit of delivering warmth and character to a space. The key is the muddiness. That earthiness is what makes it useful across very different rooms, from painted joinery to curtains, upholstery, trim, wallpaper and small decorative details. It sharpens pale tones, holds its own against dark wood, and gives patterned fabrics weight. Some great examples that make the case. 1. @harrietashton_interiors 📸 @mikegarlickdesign 2. @nadiaoliverinteriors 📸 @mikegarlickdesign 3. @elizabethhaydesign 4. @harrietsale 📸 @mikegarlickdesign 5. @uns.hobbs_interiors 📸 @boz_gagovski 6. @sarahvanrenen 7. @samuelandsons @samuelandsons_france 8. @poigneesdeportes Shared with kind permission. THE ELWICK EDIT · ABSTRACT RUGS, PART II This scheme started with the Sequence Rug by Maison Sarah Lavoine. It was the piece that set the tone for everything else. I love the contrast of the clean, abstract pattern and against the softer, more traditional details, and the way the rich tones of the rug bring warmth while giving the room a bit more structure. THE ELWICK EDIT · ABSTRACT RUGS, PART I I recently shared a post on abstract rugs and kept envisaging how they might live in a space. I am drawn to mixing different eras, where everything feels curated over time. The Moorish Pink rug is a winner in this room for me. It grounds the whole space. More room schemes coming soon. #raptureandwright #bedroomdesign #layeredinteriors #pinkinteriors #interiorinspiration

The Elwick Edit - Rugs with an abstract influence. I’ve always thought rugs are one of the easiest ways to bring pattern into a room without it feeling overdone. Walls, joinery and furniture tend to lean more structured, so a rug can offer a bit more freedom by introducing movement and colour. Abstract patterns work especially well for that. Because the forms aren’t literal, they don’t lock the scheme into a very obvious motif, which makes them surprisingly versatile when you’re layering a room. Often the rug ends up doing the work of picking up tones from artwork, upholstery or paint while grounding the whole space. Five that caught my eye recently. @amykentrugs × @raptureandwright — Moorish Pink @christopherfarrcloth — Plate 184 @maisonsarahlavoine — Sequence @floor_story — Diane Bresson Halftones @pattersonflynn1943 — Tangram #interiordesign #rugdesign #abstractdesign #designinspiration #textiledesign

Streets like this always stop me. You can see how each era has added something, sometimes carefully, sometimes practically, but it all gets woven into the fabric of the place. I’m grateful we still have buildings like this in everyday life. Uses change, finishes change, but the past doesn’t disappear. It gets folded in. You can still read the original structure, and the quality of the craft that’s allowed it to last. At the start of a new year, it feels like a quiet reminder to pause, and to think about change as something that’s built up over time, rather than rushed. … #heritagearchitecture #historicbuildings #designreference #britisharchitecture #designwithpurpose

A little Studio Elwick reset (and a belated happy new year)! I hope you’ve all had a positive start to the year. I’ve missed sharing interiors here and I’m back to posting again: the spaces I’m drawn to, the details I always notice, and the colour-and-pattern moments I can’t stop saving. I’ll be sharing moodboards, room schemes, buy lists, heritage edits, and the finishing touches that make a room feel properly considered. I’ll also be sharing my favourite makers and materials. What are you most excited to see more of in interiors this year? Antique Edit · Vanity Chests A new chapter after my recent bathroom edits. With a soft spot for antiques, I have sourced six chests that would convert beautifully into vanities and bring some old world charm into a bathroom. Dealers are tagged on the image. 1. @brownrigguk @shopatbrownrigg an eighteenth century walnut serpentine with inlaid panels that has real weight and presence. It is best in a larger bathroom where the generous depth works, topped in honed grey stone with wall taps to allow the angles, veneer and hardware to remain the focus. 2. @arcadiaantiquesuk a Swedish marble topped commode in soft sea green. It’s a match made in heaven for a cloakroom or smaller bath. Sealing the marble and using wall taps keeps the look restrained and practical. 3. Nick Jones Antiques a c.1870 French walnut wave front with elegant curves and very usable proportions. In a quieter ensuite it can keep a carefully sealed timber top. In a busier family space, a honed, low contrast stone makes it work harder without losing its character. 4. @calliehollenden an eighteenth century Danish Baroque commode in chalky lilac. The projection and profile need a room that can take the depth and some drama. A honed white grey marble top and wall taps would keep it visually disciplined. 5. @vinterior an André Arbus style demi lune with marble. The parchment finish and half moon front introduce a cleaner, mid century line into the mix. It would be lovely in a bay or alcove. Perfect if you want a softer silhouette. 6. @fernandgreen_ a small Swedish birch veneer dresser with marble and mother of pearl. A special piece that would be a standout in a cloakroom or compact ensuite. Saveable note: for comfort, aim for a finished basin rim around 82 to 83 cm. For a vessel, set the chest top to your target height minus the bowl height. Wall taps with a 120 to 150 mm projection help keep splash down and the surface clear. Reusing solid timber keeps craftsmanship in circulation and avoids new MDF. See more rooms Find the bathroom inspiration this pairs with under Bathrooms in Highlights.

On My Radar: Bathrooms with Soul, Style and Substance, Part II Get ready to be inspired by the second installment of my bathroom series, featuring designers who elevate functional spaces through creative use of pattern, craftsmanship, and one-of-a-kind pieces. @calliejwindle proves how joyful a powder room can be. Bold yellow wallpaper is masterfully paired with shades of purple in the marble and trim. The eye-catching antique chest and pink shades round off the scheme perfectly. @lisastatondesign knows how to deliver atmosphere to a space. The hand-painted walls and moss green trim blend seamlessly, while the console grounds the room beautifully. @jo.lyle.design delivers harmony in traditional and modern design. The statement floor and green glazed tile complement each other, while the ruby veined marble and double vanity bring quiet glamour. The beaded mirrors add a lovely playful touch. @sarahvanrenen keeps things fresh by pairing a stunning burled chest with bold chevron tiles, a masterclass in mixing traditional charm with sharp, geometric pattern. @nels_eyreinteriors crafts a space that envelopes you in leafy charm and elevates it with regal purple tones, bold checkerboard floors, and refined antique pieces. The shell basin tops it all off beautifully. @alegravolpeinteriors goes full storybook with an enchanting landscape wallpaper, complimented by a carved marble sink and aged brass fittings that add warmth and allure to the space. @salvesengraham prove their mastery of English style. The floral paper edged with zigzag borders is perfectly balanced by crisp marble and Art Deco elements. @sugarhousedesign creates a serene, elegant space with striped green tiles, yet it’s the intricate details that makes this room sing, from the scalloped marble basin and arched doorway, to the brass fittings and cross vanity handle. 📸 Photographers credited where relevant on each slide. Currently reading The Bible of British Taste by Ruth Guilding. It is full of rich history and wonderful stories of home, told through real rooms with layers of life. If you are curious about what makes true British style tick, this is a must read. The writing gives context, the images honour patina and craft, and the whole book is beautifully presented. One I’ll be referring back to time and again for colour, texture, and that high–low British mix. Author Ruth Guilding @bibleofbritishtaste Publisher: @franceslincolnpub @quartobooksuk

On My Radar: Bathrooms with Soul, Style and Substance I’m increasingly drawn to bathrooms that go beyond function; where colour, form, and material come together in a way that makes you want to linger. Each of the designers below reminds us that true luxury lies not in excess, but in attention; to texture, proportion, and the essence of good design. @lonikachande is fearless with colour and pattern, yet everything feels so effortless and joyful. I love the punch of red against that bold, characterful wallpaper. @droulers_architecture are masters of understated grandeur. The combination of light, craftsmanship, and proportion here is quietly breathtaking. @vsp_interiors delivers a richly layered design, full of character and warmth, yet never feeling overdone. @heidicaillierdesign creates a masterful sense of quiet drama. The rich tiles, deep tones, and architectural curves feel both nostalgic and new. @eveneleveninteriors shows how a refined palette, exquisite materials, and clean architectural lines can create a bathroom that’s both modern and timeless. @tamsynmasondesign brings English charm to life. The green vanity with bamboo detailing and antique-style accessories make it beautifully personal. @lizaphillipsinteriors offers a masterclass in heritage pattern and craftsmanship, translated through a fresh, modern palette. @christian_bense knows how to design a bathroom. The craftsmanship is exceptional, from the hand painted panels to the precise joinery. The rich colour palette and classic roll top bath add to the quiet grandeur. 📸 Photographers credited where relevant on each slide.
