As a child performer growing up in North Carolina, Timisha Barnes-Jones was cast alongside Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 production of The Color Purple. It was during that production that she had a fateful encounter with the legendary Quincy Jones, who encouraged her to “always be ready” for the opportunities around every corner.
Now, as Chief of Schools, Timisha works tirelessly to create opportunity for all students and ensure they’re prepared to seize it. Watch her Webby Awards-recognized story, ALWAYS BE READY, via the link in our bio.
ALWAYS BE READY was produced by The Wallace Foundation in partnership with Universe Creative and is the first in a series of education leadership stories that foreground the personal experiences of ed. leaders nationwide. More to come!

ALWAYS BE READY: AN EDUCATION LEADERSHIP STORY features Timisha Barnes-Jones, Chief of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, and her journey from child performer to leader of one of the largest school districts in North Carolina.
Inspired by our admiration for the work of cinematographer @greigfraser_dp , we captured ALWAYS BE READY with a set of vintage Iron Glass lenses, including the infamous Helios 44, courtesy of @charlottefilmrentals . We’re honored that Timisha’s story and all its swirly bokeh received this recognition!

Meet the Kinder Crew: a triumvirate of joyful kindergarten teachers at Gibbs International Magnet School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Under the Kinder Crew’s tutelage, reading is not only attainable for every student—it’s fun! 📚✨
This production for @waltonfamilyfdn was one of several opportunities we had to spend time in Little Rock in 2025. We recommend @brunoslittleitaly for dinner. 🍝👌🏻

What a joy to share the stage with the Maestro of Mtn Craft, @benisfilmin , at the third annual Mtn Craft Film Festival in Clarksburg, WV. We screened APPALHEADS at the gorgeous Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center and talked about the state of @appalshop and Appalachian film in general, with some insightful questions from the audience.
This film festival is a jewel of Appalachia, y’all. So much love and care go into every decision. Support independent film and the festivals that feed it!

DOC NYC remains one of our favorite nonfiction film festivals, and it was a blast bringing APPALHEADS to New York and sharing the screen with filmmakers @ninareeg and @jonah.moshammer last November.
Following the festival, we screened IMPOSSIBLE TOWN for the New York Foundation for the Arts, whose Anonymous Was a Woman Environmental Arts grant helped us take that film on tour across Appalachia back in 2023.
Always a pleasure to see New York during the holiday season, at its most charming. 🎄🎊
