Real fire, real sets, and real light still make for the best VFX. 🔥 And kind, talented people make for the best crews! So thankful to work on this epic fantasy with @abwern_photo and @ericalirez ! I wish every shoot could be so magical! ✨

A lovely day of sails, shanties, and cannons with friends! My favorite part, singing stories around a fire into the night, won't soon fade from memory! Though, hopefully the black powder on my white linens will! 🤪🏴☠️
Let's get into the devil's details! 👠😇 To capture the perfection/poise that characterizes the original film, I wrote a little expression to guide the spatial relationship between the two heels so they orbit each other like celestial bodies in an orrery.
.
For the lighting, I used especially large top and back lights to heighten the mystery and reveal the contours of such a highly reflective material.
.
Lastly, to keep the texture flawless while realistic, I added the miniscule lines of brushed metal and the subtle reflection distortions of glossy car paint.
.
Despite quick turnarounds, it was so fun to work with @glacialetchmedia and Disney on this! Hope we get to do more epic things in the future!

From 3D Batman work to supervising for VANS shoes, I'm so thankful for the many VFX projects I've got to work on this last year! Though some epic things—like those titular two—aren't in here yet, some sci-fi shots I directed and composited from my Sandswept book trailer are!! Yes, it'll finally be done soon! Anyway friends, I hope you enjoy these few breakdowns! 😊✨
.
Also, while I can't thank everyone from every shot, even the 3 #Sandswept shots alone wouldn't be possible without:
.
DP: @thepandaman2000
VFX Sup: @shadowoodanimation
Talent: @angjholee@gr4h4mmy
Camera: @reediikris@reginalinsalato
G&E: @iren.tovm@sagrera.filmmaker
HMU: @kellyaxen
Sound: @lancetagram
.
(There are even more folks to thank on the rest of Sandswept, but don't worry: your work will be out as soon as we finish more shots! 😄)

I ❤️ worldbuilding! Being a DM for the kind of games I like to run is a lot of work, but so so fun! Stoked to get to make maps, crypts, and sea monsters for these epic roleplayers! Also, look at that TV map table @jacobsenwestdesigns
Made!! It's only halfway done and is already so cool!
.
Almost as neat, I'm finally getting to put my homemade JavaScript node app to good use–and I'm pretty proud of how it's doing! (If anyone who writes or DMs wants to check out an online mind node system with streamlined hotkeys and easily portable save files, let me know!)

Merry Christmas, all! 🎄💛✨ Another year, another lovely PBDA Holiday Swing Dance! New this year: a horse drawn carriage ride and beautiful Christmas jazz concert with my amazing history-focused-Bible-study friends!
.
This year's had some lows and some highs (the latter I'll probably post about come new year's), but suffice it to say through it all I'm especially and profoundly thankful for my dear friends! And if you, dear reader and likely dear friend, haven't had a chance to see me recently, know I'm actively looking forward to our next visit and am so grateful for you! 😊

*Edit: oops I only now realized the post music takes over the audio including the beautiful jazz in the last video! At least The Arcadian Wild is also splendid*
What a treat to shoot a traditional (no shelf) bow today! 🏹 I'm no Legolas, but I did have fun shooting side by side with old and new friends! Thanks so much @abwern and @ericalirez for the invite and photos! I'll be sure to work on my drawing posture for next time! 🤪
A many photo-ed October round up! 🎃🤠 It's been a full month of crazy shoots, Halloween parties, Over the Garden Wall watch parties, birthdays, and special theater screenings! (Yes all of those are plural–Over the Garden Wall is becoming a cult classic and I'm 100% on board with this!)
.
Should I have posted most of these on their own so I could adequately do each pictured story justice? Yes. Am I pretty bad at Instagram? Also yes. So then, to describe only the pictured firsts and leave the rest to mystery: my first ever hockey game, first time seeing The Fall (with the director no less), first time going to the LightBox animation Expo, and first time seeing Chris Nolan in person! Wow, there really were a lot of firsts this month! Much to be thankful for!
.
PS: And yes, the cowboys have accepted me as one of their own. My father will forever be proud! 🙃
NY part 2: Family Adventures in the city!
Danny had the great idea of seeing the DnD show together–it was a wizardly blast! After that Tori's great suggestion of the Met Cloisters was a stunning visit! I highly recommend them to anyone in NY with even a slight inclination toward medieval history! The tour was excellent! And to top it all off, I got to see & Juliet with local friend, @noagalil !!
NY trip part 1: The Wedding!
My cousin @life_of_ryguy got married!! And I can't say how wonderful it was to spend time with family in such an idyllic place! It's not every day I get to see these beautiful faces, nor do I get the chance to explore such east coast loveliness! Just look at the light over those trees!
Been a busy but especially fun lighting month of stages, backlots, and friendship! Here are some hammy Jonny shots, stills from an APU shoot on the CBS lot last weekend, the lovely little herb garden at Paramount, and a shot of giving impromptu Tastemade scissorlift lessons!
.
I never post much about work because all the coolest things can't be shared, but I'm pretty sure these are safe and appreciate-able! 😄
.
.
Oh wait... @jacobsenwestdesigns and @dominic_lopez how much do I owe in licensing fees for your lovely sought-after faces?? Maybe I do need to rethink this post...
