Summer Workshop Teaching Models
Earlier this week I spent two fun days at
@shepherdmaudsleighstudio teaching variations on the pamphlet binding, in a class I call The Elegant Slim Volume. We started by decorating cover paper with simple “rubber” stamps made from craft foam and ink pads, then made various structures with 2-, 3-, and 4-hole sewing variations, plus using other means of attachment. We also made a soft paper slipcase.
The week before I had a wonderful time teaching as a last-minute substitute for
@valeriecarrigan at the University of Southern Maine’s
@kccba.usm Summer Program. We made Geometric Accordions one day, and a Storage Book (devised by
@hedikyle ) on a second day. Geometric Accordions covered a range of shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, circles (and the torus structure devised by
@kenleslieartist ), pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. The Storage Book allowed for encapsulation, pockets, frames, debossing, embossing, a volvelle, and other possibilities.
Many of these bindings and details I learned from my own workshop teachers over the years, so it’s great to pass these techniques along to others. And also fun to take time to noodle around, experiment, and make new variations!
Pictured are some of my models: Photo 1: My models and stamps from The Elegant Slim Volume workshop. Photo 2: My big set of examples of variations for that workshop. Photo 3: Models from the Geometric Accordions workshop. Photo 4: A completed model standing up and unbound pages from the Storage Book workshop. I didn’t get to take many pictures of student work, but they were all very imaginative people!
