A solo exhibition of my artwork (artist books and related textile pieces) is now on view at the Silver Special Collections Library @uvmlibraries through February 20, 2026 in Burlington, Vermont. Themes of this work include weather, history, and language. Many of the pieces are from a body of work based on research about an historical woman whose yearly almanacs kept track of the weather, agriculture, and seasonal observations, with some notations of her daily life. I am delighted that three one-of-a-kind books from this series have found a permanent home in the library. If you visit, make sure to check the open hours of this library before you go, as special collections has more limited hours than the main library. Photo 1: Cases holding artist books. Weather Reports on the wall. Photo 2: On the Sea. Artist book. Photo 3: The River 1833. Artist book. Weather Reports (framed textiles). Photo 4: 94 Days at Sea. Artist book (detail). Photo 5: Night-Thoughts. (textile) Thanks to @ewolffmann for these photographs. #artistbooks #bookarts #bookbinding #artistsbooks #artistbook #bookart #alongthebanksofmyriver #textileart #stephaniewolff #stephaniewolffstudio #weatherart #historyandart #weatherandart #uvmspecialcollections #uvmlibraries

I’m looking forward to my online presentation for The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Arts Guild @cbbag_bookarts next Wednesday November 5. I’ll be talking about Form and Content within my artist books, and sharing details about structures, materials, and other resources, along with how the content came about. I’m always curious about how things are made, so perhaps there will be some useful information for those who attend. And I welcome questions! It’s free for CBBAG members, and you can find more information at their website: www.cbbag.ca > Learn > Workshops. Registration closes Friday, Oct 31, 2025, 11:59 PM EST. Hope some of you can join us. The image shows a slide from the presentation showing how I made the stepped foredge for my book, The Pocket Sky Atlas. #bookarts #bookbinding #stephaniewolffstudio #artistbooks #artistbook #bookart

Summer Workshop Teaching Models Earlier this week I spent two fun days at @shepherdmaudsleighstudio teaching variations on the pamphlet binding, in a class I call The Elegant Slim Volume. We started by decorating cover paper with simple “rubber” stamps made from craft foam and ink pads, then made various structures with 2-, 3-, and 4-hole sewing variations, plus using other means of attachment. We also made a soft paper slipcase. The week before I had a wonderful time teaching as a last-minute substitute for @valeriecarrigan at the University of Southern Maine’s @kccba.usm Summer Program. We made Geometric Accordions one day, and a Storage Book (devised by @hedikyle ) on a second day. Geometric Accordions covered a range of shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, circles (and the torus structure devised by @kenleslieartist ), pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. The Storage Book allowed for encapsulation, pockets, frames, debossing, embossing, a volvelle, and other possibilities. Many of these bindings and details I learned from my own workshop teachers over the years, so it’s great to pass these techniques along to others. And also fun to take time to noodle around, experiment, and make new variations! Pictured are some of my models: Photo 1: My models and stamps from The Elegant Slim Volume workshop. Photo 2: My big set of examples of variations for that workshop. Photo 3: Models from the Geometric Accordions workshop. Photo 4: A completed model standing up and unbound pages from the Storage Book workshop. I didn’t get to take many pictures of student work, but they were all very imaginative people! #bookarts #bookbinding #geometricaccordions #storagebook #elegantslimvolume #stephaniewolff #stephaniewolffstudio #artistbooks #bookartsworkshop #bookbindingworkshop #decorativepaper

It was wonderful to have my work included in the @collegebookart Members Exhibition, during the Embracing the Tangible conference at the University of Wisconsin-Madison earlier this June. Thank you to jurors @gorhamab and @seaweed_press . I was honored to have my books, Of the Air and Hidden Attachments, alongside the work of such a talented group of artists. The conference was great, with panels, demos, presentations, readings and lots of book and art conversations, and seeing old and new friends. Returned home filled with new ideas and gratitude for the generous sharing of knowledge, artwork, techniques and thoughts.

I make housing for my own work: boxes, wrappers or slipcases. So I decided to make some archival corrugated clamshell boxes and a paper slipcase to hold small or loose work collected over the years. Happy to have these items organized and protected. I left a little room within some boxes to add pieces, but I can easily make more as needed. Work from @sjrue @passengerpigeonpress @phosphorescentfacehighlighter @artnoose @carolyn_swiszcz @dwriletterpress @varyinghare @letterror @corrainiedizioni @gaspereaupress and others. #boxmaking #zines #ephemera #letterpress #bookbinding #bookarts

Whoops! My clumsy fingers omitted the photo of Amos Kennedy from my previous post. Here’s @kennedyprints at the @gaspereaupress Wayzgoose getting the type squared away for his poster. So great to visit with him up north!

I had an amazing time north of the border recently at the 2024 @gaspereaupress Wayzgoose in Kentville, Nova Scotia. I was honored to be included in the roster of people presenting their work, from poets and printers to artists and scholars, all coming together in community with those who came to share in the day. I left with a full heart and ideas brimming. Thank you so much to everyone who shared stories, expertise, and their work and process. I am particularly grateful to Andrew Steeves for some really helpful and thought provoking conversations. Thanks to him and to Gary Dunfield for inviting me to be a part of this great event. If you never have, check out the great books Gaspereau Press publishes @gaspereaupress I wasn’t a very good documentarian, but here are a handful of images of Friday preparations for Saturday’s event. “Everything is possible, it can be done anywhere” says Andrew @gaspereaupress as we say goodbye, the days go by and I am more and more infinitely grateful to him. It’s not over yet, nothing ends! I will carry this wonderful experience in my heart together with all the people who fight for truth and beauty. The best is yet to come because precisely… “it can be done anywhere!” immensely Thank you 🩷 . . . #wayzgoose #wayzgoose2024 #poetry #beauty #passion #truth #neverstop #printer #printmaker #letterpress #fight #ink #paper #typography #printmaking #gorgeous #community #kentville #novascotia

This is the last weekend for Art at the Kent’s Illuminated Worlds exhibition, through October 6, 2024. The hills are full of bright yellows and reds, and the trip to Kents’ Corners will take you through them. Lots of artwork to see in the building and on the grounds of this historic Vermont building. @artatthekent Here are some images of my work in the show, including an outdoor collaborative sculpture. 1. Grouping of 10 Weather Reports, Along the Banks of My River (on right), and The River 1833 (artist book on table). 2. Weather 1839, Calendar and Weather 1839, Legend (above) beside one of Cameron Davis’ paintings on the right. @camidvt 3. Of the Air (artist book) with one of Michael Abrahms paintings on the wall, in the upstairs ballroom. @michael.abrams.art 4-5: Skyview, an interactive outdoor sculpture I worked on in collaboration with Syver Rogstad and the Art at the Kent team. With volvelles, poetry, weather instruments, and a fantastic weathervane designed and built by Syver, who fabricated the entire piece. If you get to the Kent, turn the wheels, and look through the window at the sky! #weather #contemporarybookmaking #artistbooks #environmentalart #historybasedart #bookbinding #bookarts #artistsbooks #stephaniewolffstudio #artandhistory #alongthebanksofmyriver #weatheralmanac #contemporaryartistbooks #textileart #artatthekent2024 #artatthekent #illuminatedworlds #vtartist #weathersculpture #weathervane

I am delighted to share that my work is included in this year’s Art at the Kent exhibition, Illuminated Worlds, which opens Friday September 6th, in Calais, VT. The opening reception is on Saturday September 7 from 3-5 pm. Perhaps I might see some of you there. A closing celebration is Sunday October 6 from 3-5 pm. Other events are also scheduled. A selection of my artist books and 2-dimensional work will be shown, most of it from my Along the Banks of My River project, which is based on historical research and largely focused on weather. I’m really excited to have this work shown in my home state, as one of about two dozen Vermont artists. The Kent is a Vermont Historic Site, and the building and location seem like other voices in a conversation amongst the artwork(s) and the environment. Definitely not the usual gallery space! The show runs through Sunday October 6th. Hours: F-Su 10-5 or by appointment. To find out more information about the show, events, exhibitors, and visiting check out @artatthekent or their website: kentscorner.org One note: Kents’ Corner is rural, at a crossroads of two dirt roads, and like many places in Vermont it doesn’t have cell service. So plan your route ahead of time if you go. Artworks pictured are by Stephanie Wolff: Weather 1839: Legend (2020); Weather Report December 6 1839 (2019); Bees (2015); Of the Air (2024). Slides 5 & 6 are posters for Illuminated Worlds and the accompanying reading series, Words Out Loud. #weather #contemporarybookmaking #artistbooks #environmentalart #historybasedart #bookbinding #bookarts #artistsbooks #stephaniewolffstudio #artandhistory #alongthebanksofmyriver #weatheralmanac #contemporaryartistbooks #textileart #artatthekent2024 #artatthekent #illuminatedworlds #vtartist

I had a great week teaching at @wells_book_arts Summer Institute two weeks ago. What a wonderful group of students! With Erica @_kettlekern as our fabulous TA. We made a variety of pages: adding frames, mounting loose items, volvelles, cobwebs, pockets, foldouts, envelopes and more. And everyone went home with it all bound into a simple softcover album structure. Decoration and content was added as each person chose, personalizing their book as desired. I wasn’t very good at taking photos, but here are some I caught in the studio and at the final Week 1 exhibition. Shown here: 1. Page with a cobweb attached and parts for post binding. This was my teaching model as we worked. 2. Volvelle from @sarahmalanowski after attaching an eyelet. Great to see the multiple layers! 3-5. Volvelle from @aurelius_sutter with original drawing and text revealed as it turns. A decorated guard. And an example of an off-center volvelle, that shows their Ouroboros concept, where no hole reveals content as designed, but the off center circles creates cool possibilities for content. 6-7. Pages from @cate.roser laid out for collation. And a page she made up of three attached petal envelopes, a variation of what was taught. 8. A sign in Morgan Hall, Wells College, June 2024. Thanks to @matasillo and @rebeccaprint for the warm welcome and support, and to @parhelion.marbling and @martin_mazorra for the great conversations. I am grateful to have been in community with everyone there. #bookarts #bookartsworkshop #volvelle #volvelles #cobweb #wellsbookarts #wellsbookartscenter #movablebooks #bookbinding #stephaniewolffstudio #wellssummerinstitute #paperengineering #bookbinding #bookbindingworkshop

Weather today? I’d say tolerably cold, but definitely more of a severely cold sky as I look out over the Berkeley CA cityscape this morning. What’s the weather where you are? Pictured is a panel from my new artist book, Of the Air, with these weather notations from an early 19th-century woman’s almanac. Original watercolor paintings are my interpretations of the descriptions. Come see the whole range from cold to hot if you attend the last day of the @codexfoundation Book Fair today in Oakland, CA. I’ll be at table 31A. #codex2024 #codexbookfair #weather #artistbooks #stephaniewolffstudio #bookarts #clouds #sky
