I was at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, yesterday for the launch of Leaders in the Field, a book about the extraordinary legacy of Fine Art associated with Mount Allison. The book was edited by my friends Thaddeus Holownia and John Leroux, and I designed it. Here are a few hasty pics of the layout. This was such a fun project to work on.
Sheets for my next letterpress book, ‘Fourteen for the Hare’ is nearly printed. One more sheet to print before I’m ready to sew and bind. Lots of type to diss too.
I’ve been spending a couple of days this week finishing up the last of the exterior cladding on the printshop with my friend Erik Barr. As most of you know, I designed and built this building myself, with some help here and there from Erik and his brother, and sometimes my son Joseph. This pre-finished Maibec wood siding isn’t cheap and I’d never installed it before, so I enlisted Erik’s skilled help — I cut boards, he installed. It’s fiddly work around the doors. Tomorrow, we’ll wrap the black steel around the butt ends of the walls and roof to meet the wood siding, and with that the exterior cladding of the building will be complete. For reference, the very last photo was taken from the same angle exactly one year ago today. Ha!
Monday starts with poems by two of my favourite people set in one of my favourite typefaces and printed damp on one of my favourite mouldmade papers. #letterpress #finepressbooks
Rainy Saturdays are for learning something new. I hope to be up to speed on this fantastic Heidelberg platen press before too much longer so I can start using it on real jobs. Right now, I’m still getting my head wrapped around how to set up forms and how to keep it feeding paper.
