Some ceramic work from the summer: barrel fired with copper & salt in a foil saggar.
This method of firing is unique because it allows you to create intense atmospheres within the barrel - unrestricted by the limits of a closed electric kiln. Organic materials, wire, metal oxides & salts all can react with each other, fuming, creating color & pattern, & entering the surface of the ceramics.
By researching Maria Selsor’s beautiful work (@selsormarcia ) and testing different combinations of combustible materials in foil saggars, I started to experiment with separating these atmospheres within the barrel to create more controlled results on each individual piece. As always, there is much more testing & learning to be done.
