Friday night, I watched Amoeba for the first time at home with beloved friends, family and My Fellow Singaporeans. I am still awash with disorganized thoughts and memories flooding back and bubbling anew. After tonight's last SGIFF screening all my messaging apps were bursting with more love and congratulations than I know what to do with ❤️ What I can immediately share is that I'm thankful that Gina crystallised in the way I wanted her to. For this I have @seeuoo to thank, for the IMMENSE trust and liberty she afforded me from start to end. In working with her and the girls @raniceanimal @onetakeblunder @shiiiannn I found the space and time to look back on my secondary school years, which were probably the four most painful years of my little life thus far. It was a time before I knew what to do with myself, before I learnt to read social cues, before I could see and understand my self in the larger context of the world. In this exceedingly lonely time, the only thing I could do to feel like I mattered to someone else was to make them laugh. When I shared this briefly during Q&A I saw a sad but heartwarming handful of affirming nods in the crowd, perhaps fellow class clowns who had their own desperate reasons for building the same funny mask that I had put back on for this film. I found myself hoping, in our R21 cinema full of adults, that over time we've allowed our senses of humour to evolve from a mere mechanism into one of many other charming facets of our personalities. It has been so very healing to feel so seen by everyone who recognised Gina, in themselves or other people. I am so lucky that @amoeba.mov exists and I'm so, so proud to be a part of it. I love every single person who made this possible and I will never stop hoping that everyone will get a chance to see this one day. Belated photos of Hedda Gabler with @thewinterplayers ❤️ The bridge from 2024 to 2025 that wobbled and swung and cracked but never gave way!! Watched this jdrama about making shoes that said something about how work is rlly just so damn hard sometimes, but rarely is there anything more rewarding than rising to those challenges. While aware of our shortcomings I am so so proud that the show came to fruition~ All because of the army of people who propped this show up on their shoulders. Thankful for the amazing company of HG as well as all who came to support, who offered their congratulations and feedback and more :) Most of all, remembering and celebrating Shahid; without whose vision and conviction Hedda Gabler would not have happened for all of us ❤️.

SECONDARY: THE MUSICAL opens at Victoria Theatre from 9 to 26 April. I am all shades of nerves, anticipation and joy. Last (belated) 2025 post is 12 Going On 13 directed by @loychinian !!! Cycling through big, big feelings for and with the kids less than a metre in front of my face. Particularly in awe of the originating cast/team for creating something so complex yet completely accessible for its target audience! In retrospect it turned out to be a pretty demanding run, but I was able to push through thanks to my school mates @cheezywingz @spookymanferoz @kimomosimomo @erikacgoh @ahjeezitsjosh @__lilin @thicclines_ who supported me without fail and lifted my spirits every day ❤️ 📸: @crispianchan

Year in Review must also include this very belated dedication to Escape to Batam — a month-sized window on my calendar with a view of rich, tangled jungles. Preparing for this show felt like looking out into that past from the confines of my bedroom over 2 years of Covid. The non- and -fictional blended and bled into each other, the lives of mine and someone else’s became indistinguishable for seconds/hours at a time. Looking back on ETB reaffirms me: hearty meals remain in our hearts long after they’ve been eaten, childhood songs are remembered long after we’ve stopped singing them, and loved ones will live in us long after they’re gone. 🤍 Photos by the lovely @pyk.photos , courtesy of @checkpointtheatre
