Across a twenty-year career, Arthur Russell created a pioneering body of work that defied classification and which continues to influence music to this day. An artist resistant to the idea of genre, his talent allowed him to excel in any number of styles and musical dialogues. Speakers Corner Quartet will reinterpret Russell’s music with the same openness and spirit that define their own. Turner Lates x Margate Radio Artist spotlight: Speakers Corner Quartet 🎶 This Friday, we’re excited to welcome South London’s @speakerscornerquartet for our Turner Late curated by @margateradio , as part of @offseasonmargate . For this special performance, the Quartet present a new work expanding on their explorations into improvisation, technology and physical presence. Hand-built robotic acoustic instruments meet a live, networked experiment, with beats by drummer Kwake transmitted in real time from a concurrent performance at @cafeotodalston , travelling across digital frequencies into the gallery. Featuring flautist Biscuit, drummer Kwake Bass, violinist Raven Bush and bassist Peter Bennie, Speakers Corner Quartet have been making music together for over two decades. Renowned for their improvisational approach and expansive compositions, they’ve collaborated with Sampha, Kae Tempest, Tirzah and Shabaka Hutchings to name a few, and toured internationally—from Glastonbury and Montreux Jazz Festival to the Barbican and Southbank Centre’s Meltdown.
