Through a slow but assured move to consolidate her classical roots into UK bass music, Londonâs
@soundsofluxe has become one of the most intriguing dance music artists of recent years.
When LUXEâs name first began doing the rounds in early 2022 after the release of her debut EP on HAAiâs Radical New Theory imprint, she seemed to have it all on lock. A sound that reflected the quick ascent of UK bass at the time, and a breakout signing on a respected record label put her in good standing for the years ahead.
While it did set the pace for her next moves, it didnât bind her to the sound that she was rapidly becoming known for. LUXEâs formative practices as a classical musician now seep into her work as both a DJ and producer, informing her new live project, in which she plays alongside a queer, all-female ensemble, incorporating an array of live instrumentation, club music, improvised vocals, and on-the-spot production in a live setting.
âFor a while, I couldnât get my head around [classical and dance music] ever colliding â they felt like very separate worlds,â she explains. âThen, I guess I did make a conscious decision to start refining how I wanted to express this sound in my own way.â
LUXE talks us through her classical-club music crossover, and delivers a mix packed with âclub pressure, compositional detail, voices through time, instruments, synths and energies drifting and swirling together.â
