A month ago I got the keys to a space that I’ve been building toward for a long time. I am a community builder and have spent most of his life thinking about how to bring people together around food. For years I’ve been doing that work in spaces that were never really mine. That has changed. 3461 is a community space and community garden at the California Hotel in West Oakland — the first home of solfood, an organization I’m building to turn underutilized spaces into trusted community infrastructure. In the past few weeks we have made more than 250 meals and hosting programming for residents and neighbors. We’re raising $20,000 by May 1st to keep the doors open. We’ve raised $13,000 of the goal. Millions of dollars have been committed to re-imagine and re-vitalize a traditionally black community in deep east Oakland. Organizers and promoters envision a neighborhood anchored by black-owned restaurants and market spaces that create jobs, foster a sense of community and create a model of healthy black community building that other cities can emulate. We’ll explore the opportunities presented by this investment and engage in a collaborative conversation about what this neighborhood could look like, and how we can work together to realize that vision. "Future Chefs of Oakland" is a pop-up event that will highlight three exciting new players in Oakland's food scene, each offering a selection of dishes out of our kitchen on W.
