The making of an algae theramin 🪸
Last summer, me and @christy.westhovens participated in the Summer School for Bits & Atoms in Fano, Italy, organised by @transmediaresearch.institute and @umanesimo.artificiale where we did the workshop Biofabricated Soft Robots and Inflatabels with Marisa Satsia @medartcabinet 🪸
We started exploring local algae to create conductive biomaterials. The inflated algae bubbles can measure proximity of touch and thus be played like a theremin. Here they are connected in pairs to a simple @c74connect maxmsp patch that acts like fm synthesis.

The interdisciplinary performance Materize interweaves sound, movement and space. The performers play the wearable electronic instrument Hreyfð, which makes sound with gestures using feedback and sensors. Thus, the performers are simultaneously dancers, musicians and a sound system.
The instrument Hreyfð symbolises the transition of technology merging with the human body — a progression humanity rapidly approaches. The development of intelligent technology is primarily focused on technicality, while its effects on compassion, care and interpersonal connections tend to be forgotten. What happens when technology becomes human? Can technology have an intimate emotional relationship with a human? The title Materize refers to the word “matter” and the formation of the intangible, as well as the Latin word “mater”, meaning mother. But who is the mother of technology, and who will care for her? And what happens when compassion is forgotten in technological development?

Becoming, is a participatory performance-installation that invites visitors to step into a sensory environment of breathing forms and morphing, interactive soundscapes.
In a space filled with musical sculptures and enrapturing scenography, the audience is welcome to roam at their own pace while contemplating the questions that the work poses: How have people's relations to one another changed in the wake of accelerated technological mediation? How might new forms of communication open up the possibility of relations that extend beyond the human and cross into hybrid technological realms?
Sol Ey's emphases on immersion, participation, and social interaction meet joyfully with Modelo62's transformative approach to contemporary music, which questions the traditional expectations of concertgoing.

Graukunst: Body / Machine presents, alongside art installations in the Grey Space, a series of live performances spread across different festival locations.
Sól Ey activates sound through movement with her wearable instrument Hreyfð, and We Can’t Help But Be Conductive brings an experimental performance for dance and modular synthesis inside the Lutheran Church. Alper Çekinmez transforms The Grey Space with a performance that explores nothingness, merging quantum unpredictability with general relativity in his own interpretation of string theory. Lola Brancovich takes the stage at PAARD, sculpting perception through the body and external apparatuses. Mustaf Ahmeti presents their queer, cyborgian and mythologically inspired work Riddle My Skin in a full-length performance at the Grey Space.
Graukunst: Body / Machine invites audiences not only to observe, but to feel, immersing themselves in a charged environment where art, music and machinery become inseparable.
