It’s hard to find the words to describe how this article makes me feel. Above all I have so much gratitude in my heart and I feel blessed to have such a wonderful story written about my life as a musician, scientist, and organizer. I am so grateful to @houstoniamag and @meredithnudo for the interview and for highlighting my work and also my struggles. I am a disabled musician, and I am glad that this part of my experience made it into the article. I don’t talk about my nerve injury much, but it is something that hinders my ability to perform how I used to. That’s why every single performance is special to me, it’s me proving to myself I can still play even though my physical therapist and doctor told me years ago that would not happen.
I feel so blessed to be in this city at this time with all of you, moving here has changed my life for the better. Before I came to Houston I was not performing or organizing anything outside of the sciences, now art is a vital part of my life I can’t imagine living without it. It’s been such an important step in my healing and connecting with others and serving my community.
Thank you all so much for the love and support you’ve shown me and for holding space for me and my art as I express myself and my vulnerabilities to you with every performance.
I want to dedicate this to my daughter who is an artist and has been painting since she could hold a brush. Her authenticity inspires me, and she is my everything.
Thanks again @houstoniamag@meredithnudo@houstonbanf@namelesssound@echoeshtx@1810ojeman@recroomarts@axelradhouston@rbyprjcts@starseed_hostel@cinemasocietyhtx@theorangeshow for being so supportive and essential parts of my path as an artist in Houston!
So much love,
Sofia S.
Sofia Silueta @sofiasilueta is a Latinx queer single mother who makes noise mariachi and plays embodied cello and ritual noise. She plays electric cello and prepared cello, using chains and flowers and sticks to make sound. Her performances are also performance art based and she make her own visuals and choreography and costumes.
Recently she played on a tour with Ritual Presents and was the only femme on the line up, I played alongside Sissy Spacek, Psywarfare, & Suppression. She would really like to reach a wider audience and expose more people to noise mariachi and take up space as a mother and femme of color in noise and experimental music.
