When Hearth announced their current show, Maybe I Should Keep This to Myself, I became instantly intrigued. The graphic design of the exhibition’s poster produced a feeling of thick mist that gases off the heart when it starts beating quickly. I would later find out that the show’s posters could pass as one of the works in the show. I believe this is the standard exhibition posters should be held up to. The comments section on the shows announcement post flooded with bow and heart emojis. The exhibition was also paired with a locket-making workshop on Valentine’s Day. I think what is so good about this show is the world-building surrounding it. As a part of the show, all of the artists and curators placed a secret somewhere in the room. At the opening, one of the curators handed me a grape and asked for a secret of my own in return. I told her that my grandparents were second cousins. This wasn’t really a secret because I’m not (that) afraid to tell it. That is what makes a secret, doesn’t it? I found myself wondering how secrets are changing form in the post-internet age Girlhood is definitely having a moment right now. In the internet age, women were allowed to be brutally honest without having to deal with the physical threats or repercussions that, in the pre-digital era, were undeniable. However, I believe this was only a facade of equality, in which everybody was equally exploited by tech corporations. As our digital selves become more and more entangled with our primal form, are we using secrets to re-engage with what we once were? As for some thoughts on the work specifically, not the culture around it ; Sofia Arév’s airbrush works are sexy and haunting. Emerald Repard-Denniston frames sapphic love in a context of dictatorial surveillance tiled with magic and intention. Joelle Quijano waves her fiery wand across Twitch stream angles. Unfortunately, I understand the feeling of perhaps I should keep this to myself all too well. @em_thepainter @sofia.a @jobellequijano @hearth.hearth.hearth @bbglowball @kaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy
