Growing up in 90s Georgia, there weren't many Latino families in our community, so whether you were Colombian, Chilean, or Cuban-American, like us, you were part of the club. This taught me an important lesson about what binds us as Latinos and our collective desire for representation in the U.S.
Early in the production of Going Varsity in Mariachi, I recognized a similar sense of solidarity in helping @alexvas.quez and @samuelosborn represent the Mexican-American experience on camera.
The result is a joyous and subtly radical statement: Within the institutional hallmarks of American education (cinder block buildings, pep rallies, and prom,) a proudly Mexican cultural art form thrives because of heroes like @abe.acuna .
