Last week’s Ghost Pub Tour for @sheffbeerweek was easily one of the most fun events I’ve ever led. 6 awesome establishments, plenty of humour, history, as well as the occasional spook & spectre. This Wednesday I’m doing it all again and 2 tickets have become available, the event having previously been a full house, and they’re now on once again listed in EventBrite: It’s one even you really don’t want to miss! @hophideout

Heaven 17’s ‘(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’ 📣⚡️🎶 We’d love to get this song back in the top 10 🎶🍺 by the power of the people 💜 @heaven17official Pull up a stool, grab a pint of something Sheffield brewed, and let’s talk about why Sheffield’s own Heaven 17 didn’t just make a tune, they built a blueprint. As we celebrate Sheffield Beer Week, it’s only right we toast to the tracks that have as much kick and character as our local beers. “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” isn’t just a floor-filler; it’s a seminal moment in Steel City history, circa 1981. Still as relevant now, sadly, as it was then… Much like a perfectly balanced Sheffield pale ale, this track is a blend of ingredients, made by Sheffield folks, that created something legendary. Glenn Gregory’s soulful, powerhouse vocals adding to the British Electric Foundation (B.E.F.) sound, infused with a heavy, slap-bass funk from John Wilson (an intriguing story in itself is how he came to play on the track, we suggest you buy @ddywray book when it’s released to find out!). It’s industrial grit meets dancefloor sweat, the sonic equivalent of a lively night here in the city. In 1981, they weren’t whispering, they were shouting about Reagan, Thatcher, and the rise of the far-right. It was banned by the BBC and it showed that pop music can be a powerful medium for social, political and cultural commentary. “Have you heard it on the news About this fascist groove thang? Evil men with racist views Spreadin’ all across the land Don’t just sit there on your ass Unlock that funky chaindance Brothers, sisters, shoot your best We don’t need this fascist groove thang” So, as you’re working your way through the draught taps, handpulls and bottles/cans at your local brewery taproom, pub, bar and/or beer shop this week in Sheffield, remember ➡️ we’ve always been a city that speaks its mind and keeps the rhythm.
