Kojo Mag Issue 5: Descendants ™️
the one thing about being caribbean is that we’ll always let you know that we’re caribbean. for the past six months, my team and i have been working on this special project for all my people from the caribbean diaspora! often times, people not from the culture use our culture and don’t do the research OR give credit where credit is due. it’s about time that’s changed. i want to see people that look like me and sound like me on the cover of magazines, in movies, in museums, etc. it all starts with US! i’m very proud to share with you the work that i made FOR THE CULTURE, FOR THE DESCENDANTS 🫂
shoutout out to my team for rocking out and to the models for serving face ⭐️

Descendants is the fifth issue of KOJO Magazine, a New York–based independent publication dedicated to authenticity, cultural truth, and the future of global Black expression. This issue explores the living legacy of the Caribbean and West African diaspora, tracing how ancestry, memory, and migration continue to shape contemporary art, fashion, music, and storytelling across the world.

DESCENDANTS is more than an issue — it’s a declaration.
Rooted in the Caribbean and deeply connected to West Africa, this fifth issue of Kojo Magazine honors the cultures, people, and histories that continue to shape the diaspora and the world. These regions are not footnotes — they are foundations. From migration and memory to resistance, creativity, and survival, our stories live across generations.
This magazine exists to document our people with care, truth, and intention. DESCENDANTS centers Caribbean and West African voices as global, intellectual, artistic, and essential — represented on our own terms.
Featuring interviews with actress Abigail C. Owunali, music producer Anson Soverall, curator Dez Amakye, and filmmaker Jonathan Logan, alongside visionary models, writers, and visual artists shaping culture today.

I OFFICIALLY HAVE MY MASTER’S OF FINE ARTS DEGREE AT 24 YEARS OLD 👨🏾🎓🌟
these past two years have arguably been the hardest two years to date. only taking a year off in between school & being so young (22 when i started), i had to learn how to balance being a full time graduate student, having three jobs, two internships, and learning how to build my adult life was hard at times. this was no easy feat for me and im elated that i was able to finish strong. im truly grateful for this experience because it taught be a lot of things about myself that i wouldn’t have figured out if i didn’t go through this. thank you to all the friends i met along the way and everybody who supported me through this endeavor.
never say that you can’t do something. if you want something bad enough, you’ll do anything to have it. stay determined, stay dedicated, and never give up - seb

I SPOKE ON MY FIRST ARTIST PANEL 🗣️
i can’t believe im writing this right now…
first off, the BIGGEST thank you to @betterthanyesterdaysocial & @ottayoshay for having me as a panelist. life is so crazy because i was an artist displaying work in the first gallery show which seems like so long ago now. oh how we were just some young artists and now look at us 🙂↕️
being on my first panel was an amazing experience! we need spaces like these where our community can come together to support each other and help push that envelope. it brings me great joy to be able to speak about all the knowledge i’ve gained over the years in hopes of making the path a little easier for someone else!
if you weren’t there, let me tell you, the chemistry and answers shared between myself, @ca22ava & @nia.alexsandra was phenomenal. i’m so honored to have had the opportunity to share the stage with these wonderful artists and people. it’s always great to meet new artists in my community 🤝🏾
once again, thank you to @betterthanyesterdaysocial@ottayoshay & @abronsartscenter for this opportunity! you’re doing more than you know and we thank you for that 🫂

first time shooting film with strobes ⭐️ w/ @dariusadamsonjr ,@avaswebsitedotcom , @glo_debelle
slowly, but surely, getting back on the horse. i’ve been itching to make some work, but also thinking about overthinking the process of making work. it’s been a weird process of making work after school because my perception of making art has change after obtaining knowledge on applying for grants and shows, creating projects that can stand in a gallery, having a studio practice, etcetera.
these days, it’s been important for me to remember that i’ll always be a student of the game. that means allowing myself to just try new things and see what works and what doesn’t. not everything has to be gallery standard or perfect, but the build up and practice will lead to something great.
