A warm commencing of the next chapter to the MFA class of 2026. Wonderful to see how much growth each artist underwent through the program. And a big hand to all our fabulous faculty and staff (we caught a few on stage) great to celebrate this achievement together!

Cnena Smith is a New Yorker of Jamaican heritage who makes personal work, where memory keeping and storytelling take physical form. Crucial to Smith’s practice is the management of their schizophrenia, which has activated an exploration of their own body in space and time, internalized cultural understandings, and family bonds. It is also an expression of Smith reconciling the outer world with their inner life. The results are paintings, collages, sculptures, and performances which are tableaux of the pivotal moments of their life, relative to the wider world.

After graduating from Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Yuka Nakamura worked for the fashion brand Comme des Garçons and later spent nine years as an editor for the life-style magazine Kurashi no Techo. Although art making was always present in her life, Nakamura’s journey into motherhood, in culturally rich Tokyo, began to focus her painting practice on the intimacy of her family’s everyday life. Nakamura pulls into conscious view ordinary domestic objects which support the routine functioning of a young family’s daily modern life. What is revealed in her collages, luminous paintings, and sculptures are the residue of care giving, frustrations, anxieties, and the sublime of intentional solitude.

Gabriella Mazza was born in Messina, Sicily and grew up in Asti, in Italy’s Piedmont region. In 2005, a career as a linguist would eventually bring her to New York City. This new proximity to the New York art world spurred a rediscovery of painting and a desire to make art. Esoteric spirituality, medieval and Renaissance paintings, along with Catholic iconography are the springs from which Mazza pulls inspiration to create her vivid objects. With a saturated color palette of jewel tones and neons, Mazza creates paintings, tapestries, sculptures and installations that represent the astral plane, divine light and the divine feminine.

Animus Zhang’s toolkit includes the smartphone, inkjet printer, screens, projectors, and social media. These tools are used, in various combinations, to conceive, manufacture, and display their work. Through photography, text, and video, Zhang makes observations about the relationships humans have with non-human things. The observations are evidence of human desire. Zhang’s images are strategic distortions of disused or intermediate industrial places, that disorient the viewer. Solitary abandoned objects emerge from the shadows of eerie landscapes provoking a range of emotions; from curiosity, unease or disgust to profound loneliness. Other works deliver humorous commentary on our often-unhealthy attachment to digital electronic devices. Zhang’s medium of choice is therefore self-referential and self-critical. And like our interactions with modern technology, this work relies upon its audience’s looking, thinking and feeling for its completion.
